Misleading classifieds
Discussion
Just felt like making a mention of this.
I see several classifieds on pistonheads where it says "sold via pistonheads" Oh yeah, really?
Matey from classic marques appears to have sold the TR5 with an asking price of £22,500.
Not so - if you check on e-bay it's on there for sale... again - last time I looked it had got to £10,000 and had failed to sell the first time it was offered on e-bay.
Could those administering the classifieds please either confirm that it has been SOLD or alternatively WITHDRAWN as is clearly the case here otherwise the information is misleading.
Clearly the ploy is to suggest that the value/price of cars is higher than they actually are purely for the profit motive. In reality they are selling for considerably less.
Any one any particular views or gripes on this or alternatively been a victim of this type of 'sting'.

1. Which TR5? There are pictures of 2 distinctly different cars in the TR5 for £22.5k advert. If the dealer tells Ted it was sold ('it' being the reason for the ad), via a PH ad, then that's what you get - a sold by PH banner. I'd suggest the problem (if there even is one) is with the dealer for being a bit cheeky and advertising multiple cars in a single ad.
2. An advertiser can put their motor up for whatever they want in whatever publication they want. What's the problem? The first car I bought through PH I got for the 'right' price, depsite its optimistic listing. The last car I bought I paid the dealers advertised price. So what? That's hardly the fault of PH.

Ok here we go again,
This week an advert has appeared inn the classifieds section for a red TR4 for sale by Sports Car Classics at £10,995.
I've no problem with that.
However, the self same car was SOLD, yes SOLD, (not withdrawn) on ebay last week (18th Jan) at £8,117. Winning bidder was harryetype17.
The classified advert is using all the same photos etc from the ebay advert.
Could it just possibly be that the ebay profile of the seller, flips 190(1) and/or harryetype17 are one and the same with Sports Car Classics?
Coincidentally, I have to-day received an email from ebay concerning the practice of 'shilling' (the owner of the item bidding up the price under an alternative ebay profile)
Ebay are also asking for ‘shilling’ to be reported so that they can take action to remove the ebayers and inform trading standards.
Anyone dealt with Sports Car Classics? Any more views on this, for or against? What do Phers regard as dishonest/misleading in these circumstances?

Doesn't that perhaps indicate that someone has bought a car on ebay, and put it up for sale on Pistonheads? Hardly crime of the century, no?

And how are you supposed to identify shill-bidding on ebay, now that they only show 'bidder1', 'bidder2', etc. and the profile linked to each of these is just a sample of their feedback with no way to check their proper history as you normally would to identify multiple accounts?
Hi MMM five
Yes that's a very valid point... I have sensed an occasion before where I felt I was bidding against the owner of the item but clearly no way of establishing that fact.
Here though, in the case I've highlighted, the TR4, I can't believe that anyone on pistonheads would buy a car off ebay one week and place it for sale the next on PH classifieds, or if they did, they wouldn't copy the text and get the identical photos from the seller to re-use in the PH classifieds.
No, in my opinion, the buyer and seller are both likely to be one and the same - Sports Car Classics, and if so have been 'shilling'.
