Hi, I know it's a difficult question to answer without see or driving the car, but I've seen a car at a Jaguar dealer and it seems great value at the price.
The mileage is a little high for the year I know, would this be an issue, or do the engines last well.

I don't expect there to be a nikasil issue, and I'll ask about the tensioners, but is there anything else I should be wary of?

Cheers, hopefully I'll have joined the ranks soon :-)

Bloody cheap! I got mine on sale at 25K same yr but it does have a shedload of extras with 67K on the clock. The engines last well as long as maintained regualrly so service history is important. Timinig tensioners are still an issue so you will wanna here the car start from cold and listen for a ticking sound coming from the engine. Apart from that should be sweet as a nut!

Watch the temperature guage closely. Thermostats and partucularly the water pumps can fail, resulting in a cooked engine and severe open wallet surgery! The water pumps have come in several versions to alleviate the problem of the plastic impellors breaking, thus circulating water at a lesser rate. the 'stats can seize in the closed mode! If memory serves, the better type of water pump is a two piece casting where 5 bolt heads are visible. The earlier variety is one piece with 4 bolt heads. As a dealer they should be able to check as should you whilst examining the service history. Also ensure that the so-called sealed-for-life gearbox changes gear cleanly with no odd noises, kicks down properly and will change into the sport mode. It is not unknown for these to fail and the ain't cheap! Ensure that the car comes with a Jaguar-backed warrenty for piece of mind.
Good luck, let us know how you get on please.

Well I've now bought the car for £13,500 :-)

The test drive was great although I think I was that impressed with the smoothness of the drive that I didn't really get near to trying the performance aspect.

I haggled but couldn't get the price down any lower than £13,500. It seemed like a great price at 14 grand so I'm more than happy.

There was a squeeking noise from the engine but the dealer is replacing the belt, they're doing a 12 month MOT on it and doing a service. Any issues identified will be fixed before I collect it. There do not appear to be any tensioner issues or nikasil issues so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everythin will be OK. No reason why it shouldn't be, but my last sports car was a TVR cerbera which nearly had me in tears at time, so now I'm paranoid about cars!

Only problem is I haven't been able to sleep since I bought it! I can't wait to go out for a proper blast :-)

Congrats on getting your new P&J. Don't worry about the nikasil problem as this would probably have shown itself before now. New fuels are very low in sulphur so don't affect the engines like the older fuels did. Would get the thermostat and waterpump checked and also the secondary tensioners as these are known problem areas and should be replaced with the latest spec aluminium bodied type.
