Trickle Charger for a 997

Do trickle chargers that plug into the cigar lighter work on the 997? I read in the archives that the cigar lighter is effectively disconnected when the engine is off.
Also, am I right in assuming that the CTEK 3600 is good enough to keep the battery in reasonable condition for three weeks left standing?

I had a plug in charger but I had to leave the key in for it to work. This was on a Boxster. I changed the plug in for a CTEK 3600 which was fine. Easy to connect and disconnect and worked fine. I have forgotten it was plugged in and tried to drive off but that's just me being daft! I've had no battery issues since using the CTEK.
Try these used one for ages works fine. www.draper.co.uk/Pages/Pagesource/p67.pdf. Item number 4, cheap too.

What year is the car? I've not heard of this before. I'm sure the insurance industry would love to pay out on that one!
You left your key in to charge the battery did you sir. That ok then. Who do we make the cheque out to?

I Wonder where Porsche gets theirs from....
I have a CTEK3600 and have been using it for weeks. You can leave it plugged in for months at a time and it works really well. I use the battery conections as I can fit it, switch it on, close the boot and lock it up!

Isn't the optimate an old fashioned transformer rather than an electrical switching one as per the ctek? The ctek is very compact and light.

Not sure of the technical spec but it charges, reconditions and maintains a battery. I've used them for years and never had a problem with my bikes or cars. The Optimate is very compact, about the size of the power supply for a laptop. To be honest, it sits in the garage anyway, so if it was twice the size than it actually is it wouldn't matter anyway. It does the job of keeping your battery in good health and they are very reliable, what more would you want for this application?
The CTEK is the more modern and feature rich device. It sits happily on a wiper blade as it is really light and works a treat. It conditions and charges and has won many awards for inovation and many like for like comparisons I am told. I looked at all of the options and without fail people suggested the CTEK was the best device I could buy, even when they sold all of them. I am sure all of them will do as they say.

CTEK 3600 on ebay at the moment http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CTEK-XS3600-120 did a search and this is the least expensive anywhere.

I have two of the Optimate/Accumate chargers. One for the Porsche and one for the Tiv. Had them for years (both cars and chargers) and even after three weeks of standing the cars start on the button every time. I'm sure the CTEK will be just as good but I can thoroughly recommend the units I've been using.

With my charger I just run the cable through the door and plug the end into the cigarette lighter socket. Close the door on it, lock and alarm. No problems. The cable is thin enough to have its diameter absorbed easily by the "rubber" door seal.
