Just upgraded my PC, so I'm finally able to play some decent games.

Downloaded the demo of rfactor at the weekend and was, overall, extremely impressed. The demo car (don't know what it's called, but has output of 166KW IIRC) feels very realistic in most respects. Physics seem spot on, except for a little too much understeer imho - I take it the car is not FWD?

One issue I'm experiencing is that sometimes I go for a little tail-out action, get the car vaguely sideways, then ease off, give it opposite lock, but it completely spins! Why? Surely this just should not happen - the angle of the slide is usually pretty mild, I'm off the power and giving it maximum opposite lock, but sometimes it's unrecoverable. Very strange.

I've got a Logitech Driving Force Pro and I'd love to play rfactor in some kind of league. Do any PHers take part in such a thing? I'm pretty set on buying it, but I'm only interested in racing real people, so won't make the purchase until I'm sure there is a good multiplayer following.

Understeer = front wheel drive. I think all the demo cars are except the F1 BMW 2006 of course.

There's quite a few of us, when something's arranged there's probably about 8-9 regulars. I think we had 11 or 12 on the Christmas enduro.

instead of easing off try holding a steady throttle or in a FWD car, nail it. you shouldn't spin then.

a lot of people play sometimes but not many for the past 2 weeks or so

LOL - I think you're right it is FWD. I was driving it thinking it was RWD - that explains the scrabble off the line and the horrible lift-off-ness.

I'm vaguely competent at the demo course now - can beat it comprehensively on 'Intermediate' with no driving aids except for auto clutch - since I have no pedal for that! ABS is also switched off since I don't want to be dependent on it.

Can servers be set up so as to disallow driving aids? Would be a bit unfair if someone wanted to race properly in the same game as someone with everything switched on

Think I'll buy it

Yes. Although I think we always have auto clutch available and invulnerability on too just so that every can have a fun race and not make a mistake and crash at turn 1 and damage their car beyond repair.

I play it a lot, but I've not been able to get it to work online yet. It runs nice and smotthly offline, but as soon as I try to connect to an online race it goes ridiculously jerky! As soon as I can sort this I'll be racing online!

The strange thing is I race online with GT legends with no problems.

That's a bit strange Marc. It would seem that a lot of the networking code is shared between rFactor and GTL so I can't see any good reason for you to be having problems. Typically we would recommend that you turn off firewalls and anti-virus for a short time to see if that's having an adverse effect.

Maybe I could set up a private server and you can try a direct IP connection to that. Some people have reported better ping times in this case, although in theory it shouldn't make any difference.

Thanks for the advice I'll have to have another look into it tonight if I get chance.

Wednesday night is traditionally an Rfactor night so hows about we have a go tonight at 8pm like the good old days? It's time we sorted out a new Championship as thats the only way we get decent grids

yes and yes.

what cars/track tonight? (I vote for 79s at Ostereichring). I think the server may need rebooting or something as it cocked up on Sunday. Also, the server seems to have an old version of kyalami (perhaps the 79 demo is still on it?) as I got mismatches with it that I don't get with other 79 servers.

what cars for the league?

If it is the 79's can you change the "Fixed Upgrades" setting from 'yes' to 'no' so that we can run whatever chassis we want to. Older Ferrari T3 newer A2 Arrows, Lotus 79 or Renault RS11 and not the default cars. I know they are always fixed on Historical but we are on the unrestricted version but without the fixed upgrades set to "No" we can't run any other car except the default.

If anyone doesn't know what I mean, go to your chosen car in the vehicles screen and click upgrades then the car types/chassis (last option) where you can choose which one you want to drive. But remember to change the car skin to match eg. a Williams FW06 car skin will not work on a Williams FW07.

big bad ben

Sorry to hijack the thread (I'll start a new one if that's better), but this caught my eye:

What sort of spec PCs are you rFactor fans using? I'm hoping to upgrade my PC in the near future (for work purposes, of course hehe ), and I was wondering what sort of spec I'd need to run rFactor and GTR smoothly with a decent level of detail? In fact, what about if I wanted to smoothly run the games on the highest detail setting?

The "minimum requirements" I've seen for rFactor look suspiciously low...

Thanks! and apologies to OP again

double hi-jack here.

I'm just waiting for my G25 to show up, how realistic are the proper racing games on the PC with this wheel ?
Would love to know

PC racing sims such as RFactor, GTR etc, are far far more realistic than anything consoles have to offer. So much so that if you turn off all the driving aids you will spend the first 30 minutes just trying to keep the car pointing in the correct direction.

This is with any wheel, not specifically the G25.

Would that happen in real life though ?
heh, maybe.

I just meant, if you start to oversteer badly, can you correct it as you would in real life, ie; it reacts like it should.

I've asked a few people that question (I have nothing to compare it to being 16) and most would say it's realistic however it is in a way more difficult as you can't feel the forces through your arse.
