I have recently changed my computer internet connection to WiFi (which was a problem on it own) and am having a few problems. Quite often the connection will work fine for an hour or so and then just hang and drop out. It is usually difficult to re connect

I live in an old stone house in the middle of no where and am using a wanadoo/orange broadband livebox with a usb wifi connecter.

I know nothing about computers so please keep it simple but is there a way of boosting the signal or do I have to put the box in the same room as the computer or any other ideas on this magic technology

Heres hoping

Oh dear, yet another.
How far away is the computer?
How many walls & their construction has the signal having to pass through?

it's that french stone hehe

Sorry if this is repetitive but I get a bit lost in the computer speak

The computer is max 5m away

If the signal goes round corners then there is no obstruction just a corner, otherwise it is trying to get through about well over half a metre of finest french stone hehe

gsxrblue,i have relations in france, yes they certainly know how to build houses with stone, they had the same problem, went hardwired in the finish,up until that time they used the same orange unit as you with no luck.

Ok so it sounds like the problem is the stone but with my limited knowledge I really cant understand why it works ok for an hour or so then the problems begin confused

or should I just stick to renovating old buildings

Errrrr....good question.
Probably as the equipment heats up it struggles to maintain a signal.

Have you tried moving the livebox nearer to the gap or even upstairs above the computer & see if that's possible to maintain the signal?

Otherwise, it's some traditional cat5 hardwiring

I know ppl who have experienced similar problems to this, they connect to their broadband account, everything runs fine and then after a certain amount of time connection stops working. In some cases this has been because there has been a maximum connection time that dicsonnects them after that time has lapsed.

Have you tried talking to you Internet Service Provider to see if they are aware of any easy solutions to your difficulties?

It might be coz of the usb adapter. I have had problems with these in the past and I don't like them as they fall over alot. Try using a pci card instead or a pcima card if its a laptop.
