photo question - what needed for a good close track shot?
Discussion
Hi,
I used a Canon EOS350D with a Sigma 70-300mm f4 - 5.6 lens to get my close up shots, but the only way I really found to get a good clear shot was to find a gap in the fence or be looking over the top of it from the grandstands... Not exactly the answer you were looking for I reckon, but it worked for me!
With hindsight, I would probably have bought a lens with a bit more "width" than mine to allow faster shutter speeds on close-ups.
Patrick.

I've been using a Canon IS 100-400mm which has a setting which won't focus on anything within 6.5m, very handy for pesky fences.
Anyway, here's a few places I've found which get great shots...
(1) During the afternoon practice/race sessions climb the Dunlop Bridge fence on the outside of the circuit looking towards Tetre Rouge. Very close, very clear. Get someone to hold you and your bag/beer. Be fair though as this is always popular and I'll be huffing from below if you stay there too long.
(2) Get in the trees on the inside of the circuit the corner before Tetre Rouge. Gaps in the fence and the cars are either coming up from the dip towards you or going flat out past you.
(3) The area between the karting track and the Karting Nord site is excellent. At dusk I got some right belters here.
(4) Also, Mulsanne Corner from the embankment is pretty good.
This year I'll be hunting a few other places otherwise all my pictures will start to look the same.....

My 9 year old son took this at testing last year with a tesco £2.49 throw away. Not bad i thought.

Just a quick one. The pic of the Aston at night in pits. I remember you taking that. Our seats are just in front of where you stood at back of stand.

How much money we talking for these sort of bits of kit? - would like some proper decent shots this year.
This debate has raged several times on assorted forums I’m not going to start it again but if we talk NEW kit, as on Jessops and only Nikon cos that what I use…and no spare kit or back up or laptop etc
Body D2X £3000
www.jessops.com/Store/s35710/0/Digital-SLRs/Nikon/D2Xs-BODY-ONLY/details.aspx?&IsSearch=y&pageindex=1&comp=y
600 mm lens £7600

And that’s only to get you started before you take a single picture…… Then you start competing with everyone who give away there pictures cos they think there is money to be made as a motorsport snapper....

Well, my Canon is now selling for about £450 (Which is a lot less than it was when it was launched - grrrr
) and my lens sells for about £150, so while not cheap, it won't break the bank
Sample pics taken through a hole in the fence under one of the tv screens...
this one's blown up quite a bit:

And remember you normally need 3 bodies and a wide a zoom and a medium tele photo lens Plus lap top and spare and twenty odd 2 or 4 GB compact flash cards and a couple of 300 GB hdd's a hotel and food and flights or car, then proper insurance everything may get nicked or smashed while on route……
