I have been informed that I need a specific Cable Modem/Wireless Router for use with Telewest Broadband. Has anyone got one? If so, can anyone advise a model number . Thanks.

Can you clarify please? Are you talking about a replacement cable modem (i.e. wall jack <-> 'box') or a router / WiFi jobbie that would bolt on to this.

In the first instance, Telewest Broadband should provide this (if it's Cable and not their 'out of range' ADSL offering). If it's the second then... anything really.

Yes, I see the confusion. This is not at my house, rather the gs's.

I have a combined ADSL Modem/Wirless Router at my house. She has the Cable type at hers. The modem has gone kaput & TWest reckon thay can't get out until Thursday to replace it. This is a big problem because she is working from home (well not at the moment) & need internet access.

I want to add the wirelss facility so when I'm there, I can use my notebook.

So to sum up, I had thought that I could purchase the equivalent for the TWest service that I use on my BT Broadband at home.

Having looked around, I think perhaps not unless you have a suggestion.

Thanks.

I strongly suspect that any hardware that plugs directly into the TW network will need to be identified to TW in advance - practically, this means that TW would need to supply it themselves.

Can she not just come over to your place for a couple of days?

Its a Motorola SB3100 or SB4100 around my way..

However, the mac code needs to be loaded onto Telewests platform. There are ways round this, but if they are coming over on thursday it's probably not a good idea...

The cable modem bit that plugs into the Telewest Cable will be unique to them.

After that, you can do what you want with it.

Wireless router into the RJ45 port and bingo, wireless everywhere.

Ok. Thanks for clearing that up

As others have said, in this country the Cable companies supply the equipment and all of it's internal addressing will need to be added to the system.

I realise it's not the best solution to the problem but why not make her an Orange PAYG dial-up account? She should be able to VPN in to work and get things done, albeit slowly for a day or two.

Once you've got the STB/modem replaced dropping a wireless router on is simplicity itself, but it, plug it in, connect to the STB/modem and configure it.
