It seems I am imminently going to purchase an Evoiii Fq300.
Reading an article last night it suggested that clutches on these lasted as little as 4500 miles if driven hard yikes

Is this true?
If so-how much are replacements?

I presume you mean VIII?

Of course-well spotted!

Edit Oh-and btw- this is partly your fault making me feel narrowminded- test drove one at the weekend- ugly car with a terrible interior. But absolutely ing awesome to drive. I'm hooked.
And soon to be a little chavvy

300bhp 4WD car, where do you think the weak point is (or should be)....

I'm sure most people could trash a clutch on one of those in an hour.

You can kill an Evo clutch in half a dozen racing starts. Much better to just let the clutch out reasonably quickly and then boot it.

The FQ400 press cars came with instructions to the journos to not do racing starts as they were very easy to break.

Good to hear. Makes me feel much better.
Picking it up tommorow which I am quite excited about.
Where in Bucks are you?

Edit: Please say things to get me even more excited about it. I only test drove one briefly so there is still a touch of the unkown there

Where abouts do you have to go to pick it up? I've got to go to MK tomorow so if it's that way I'll give you a lift???

Very kind of you Gaz> Thanks a lot for the offer.
Sadly the car is in somewhere called Boston.
Not exactly sure where that is but sure enough that its nowhere near MK, nor in fact anywhere else I've ever heard of

Erm, they get faster with age and an Ecutek remap and decat can see you with an easy 350bhp and 350 of torques*. Mine made exactly what it said on the box at a very hot Surrey RR day last year. With cooler weather, Vixpy reckoned it would make more.

Have you gone for a six speeder? (I *think* all eights were!)

If so, they are remarkably civilised on the motorway.

compared to what? riding a pushbike????

I found the VIII I nearly bought anything but civilised.. it was like being inside an airfix model of a car...

Granted, it's no limo but in top, when you have distance to cover it is much less tiring to drive than my old five speed clio. It has plenty of torque so changes down are rarely necessary. It is reasonably quiet - or maybe I'm just deaf from it!! hehe

I use it every day to commute 25 miles each way along the M1

yeah, in all fairness i was coming from a Lexus... so somewhat of an unfair comparison... though, I think coming from a 1969 mini you might think the interior was a bit 'sparse' hehe

I think that's way, way up north, like Cumbria north I think! I get lattitude sickness if I go that far North.

yes I feel quite unnerved by it all too. Wierd thing is, though, I'm fairly certain that the dealer doesn't know what the car is and thinks that he is selling a bog-standard Evo8 gsr thus the car is the best part of 4k cheaper than any others and I am assured it will be 'mint'. Otherwise, naturally, I wouldnt be going there under any circumstance.

Perfect!! I am fairly certain 350 torques is correct! Or at least should be.

With regards to the clutches, there are more horror stories than truth. The Evo 8's have a larger diameter clutch, so they hang on to more power than the previous models too.

It's true that if you dick about in the car, you can burn a clutch out very quickly. It's the launches that do it. Dialing in 6000rpm and then just side-stepping the clutch will kill it very quickly.

My car went from March 2000 to July 2006 on its standard clutch. 6 months of this was at 350bhp, then the last 6 months was at 388bhp, then it finally started to slip under boost.

I had it changed for an Exedy Twin Plate that was modified by AMS in the USA (creators of the word record-holding drag cars).

This clutch is mental. I've done about 50 or 60 5500rpm launches and never ever smelt it burn once. It's a little heavier than the standard one, but you'll never have to worry about it. It drives quite nicely too. Nothing like a paddle clutch at all.

Where abouts are you based? I can put you in touch with an Evo specialist who will fit a clutch for an unbeatable price if you're South-East based.
