Brakes - Anyone experienced NITRAC discs?
Discussion
In view of an imminent brake upgrade, I am aware of these NITRAC discs: anyone aware of or used these and vouch for the claims ?????
Ultra High Performance NITRAC 8 Grooved Front Brake discs for TVR Chimaera
Disc dimensions are: 260mm dia, 24.0mm thick, with 4+1 stud fixing
“NITRAC” discs are only made from high quality close grained perlitic grey iron castings in accordance with the requirements of BS1452 and DIN1619. devoid of blowholes and/or inclusions, crack free and uniform in both hardness and texture. Cryogenically treated produces a finer and more consistent grain structure within the cast iron of the disc giving greater torsional strength, greater abrasion resistance, and much better thermo-dynamic performance.

Andy,
As Frozen Solid, the company that makes these discs, has only just started to market them under the 'NITRAC' name you won't find much direct experience of them yet. However, I know Frozen Solid have been Cryo treating discs for the motor sport industry for many years. Have a word with Jon Savage of Cambridge Motorsport who has a lot of experience of using discs treated by the company. They really do work!

For all practical purposes one cast iron disc is much the same as another; most of that description can be ignored. The only distinguishing feature of these discs is that they have been cryogenically hardened. I guess the theory is that the hardening will reduce the wear rate which could make the disc last longer. I don't know what effect this would have on the pad/disc interface, the behaviour is complicated and this change could make it better or worse, or make no difference. Hopefully it doesn't make it worse, anyway. I'd treat these with suspicion, if they're claiming they're better than plain cast iron discs then let them explain why. Otherwise I'd file them with all the other people claiming that their cast iron discs are magically better than everyone else's. What you're paying for in that case is the box.
