Great engine. 20 valve came in with the big nose facelift late 2003. 175bhp and six speed box. Earlier 10 valvers just as good (140-150bhp 5 speed). Don't suffer from too many problems or cambelt breakages like the Twin Sparks. Quite heavy, but this is balanced by the slightly heavier Sportwagon back end. One of my fave cars of all time.

Guy that works for me has the 1.9 TD and the cambelts went on it at 47,000 miles, it was actually booked in for the 48,000. Doing it under warrenty.

I actually spoke to him today and the cambelt went because the water pump broke which from what i understand leaked water (or something) which in turn jamed a bearing and then the cam belt basically melted.
The garage have a 156 in there that has done the same with just 20,000 miles.
The thing is you get horror stories all the time. I have to be honest and thought they were shite until i got my current 156, yes it is a company car but i have to say i would seriously consider buying a second hand one, you get allot of car for not allot of money.

sister's cambelt also snapped at 48,000,
have had loads of alfa's, always changed cambelts at 40,000. never had any problems, also stay clear of selespeed and they are great car's,
although i don't do diesels.
will always have an alfa in the garage!

thats the bit that will probably put me off buying, even though i do all my own maintenance
But that was the 1.9 and you asked about the 2.4...

If you do your own maintenance you may like to know the 2.4 10 valve does not have hydraulic tappets and at some point they do need setting. The 20 valve has hydraulic ones.

ok thanks for that, there must be similar issues with the 2.4 though?
Why? It's a completely different engine!

By all accounts the 2.4 is a strong lump. It very rarely crops up as having specific problems other than the odd peripheral like engine mounts knocking. People are wracking up some big mileages on them now. I think there's a guy in the AROC with 200,000 miles plus on his 10 valve and there are plenty well over 100,000.

Completely different engine again but I have the 2.5 V6 and it's done 102230 and she's solid still. Not drinking as much oil as I expected (from all the stories I've read) either.
Yep, looks good to me.
1 owner as well if the ad is accurate.
I've found over the years that Alfa's that have had a high number of owners have proved been troublesome, my own experiences tell me that.
My own 1998 car was bought as a 1 owner from new last year and so far has been very reliable.

thanks for the input, this looks a decent buy

Not bad at all. Quite unusual being a Turismo with leather. Must be one of the very first facelift cars so you get the integrated stereo with steering wheel controls and some decent kit like Bose stereo. Check you are happy with the way it drives. The standard supension with the heavy JTD engine was a big no-no for me, but it's each to their own. The main thing is to try it. Rear wiper looks like it might have conked as well!
Looks OK, but I would agree with the last post re the soft suspension and the heavy engine, I have a 52 reg Veloce and speed humps are taken with care, same colour, engine, interior etc with 94k from new. Excellent car all round, enough space, pace, comfort and economy for the family duties. Has only broken down once, crank speed sensor, cheap easy replacement. Servicing isn't too bad if compared with rivals.
