I had AVO shocks fitted all round about 2 years ago. They're good enough for a budget piece, but the few times I've gone to adjust the damping (usually at the start of winter, and again at start of spring) I've found the rear adjusters to be pretty much seized solid - once so badly I had to get Steve H to help. Usually a few squirts of WD and after a cup of tea, the things give up the fight. Obviously they suffer a LOAD of crap thrown against them over the years.

Meantime.. that's what happeend again today, except now the pot on one of the shocks goes around forever and ever .. going for a catious drive now to see how the car feels (no idea wha setting nearside rear is now).

Anyone else suffered / cured this ?

Take the adjuster knob off using the small allen headed grub screw and you should find a small pin.make sure it is located properly, pack the space with copper grease and reassemble. The adjuster should then work ok and the copper grease should prevent it from seizing up again

AVOs are also rebuildable, and dampers deteriorate with age so yours won't be performing at optimum anyway so why not send them away to avo for a check over and rebuild?

Is 2 years & approx 10K miles enough for a rebuilds Jools?

OK am filthy again...

Got the knob off & naturally found the pin. So... Looking with a mirror to see what's on display in the shock, theres a plate with 6 grooves.. I assume the pin just shoiuld sit into any of these.. ?

I'm thinking that it's this plate thats siezed now, since I've relaxed the adjuster knob's sieze. If I squeeze the knob with pin back into place & turn, it clicks away with the familiar noise & feel, but I reckon the clicks are the pin moving over the plate and not turning it. Hum. (the pin's home is spring loaded I notice)

Or am I missing something ?(apart from my dinner). Is there only one position in which this pin should sit that I have missed? I tried cleaning up around the grooved plate - to try find any clogged up location but cant see one (quite tricky whilst shock still attached to car of course - and dont like lying under low cars too much!)

Perhaps the pin sheared / has suffered wear when I managed to turn the knob ?

The evidence so far -

I sent mine back to AVO last year for a rebuild. Quick turnaround, and no charge, plus they put in the newer bumpstops etc

Impressed with service, and impressed it was free. Might make a charge for it now though.

Thery're based in Northampton and I've had mine done there before last year, worryingly one needed doing at only 10K miles however at only 15 quid to re-furb it and bearing in mind the cheap purchase price I'm not complaining

well cheers for tips... sorted for now. Left the plate soaking in WD40 for a couple of hours (watched VHS of 'MotorSport Mundial' from the other night.. was the Sebring 12hr race & saw a few glimpses of the Tuscan!!)

Put knob back on & pressed in firmly & tightened grub screw up again. Result - nothing moved at all. Right.. loosened it a bit - clicks around for ever.. so tightened a bit etc etc. Eventually got it there. Expect will be the same come next time I try to adjust them though. Anyone got the tel no for AVO by the way?

Oh, have set the rears to 10 clicks (from soft) for Spring, as opposed to 6 clicks for winter, in case any other AVO chums care what I use

Cheers for help again!

Ed
