hiya,

spring time will be on us soon and i need to give the car some attention in advance to limit my downtime when the weather gets better.
My starter / solenoid has been playing up and it takes me 6 or 7 attempts at turning the key before the starter decides to turn over and fire up the engine, the ususal clicking of the solenoid engaging can be heard and when the starter does spin it sounds laboured initially. The Battery / charging circuits are fine.

Is the starter / solenoid from the standard rover item, or is it a beefed up / special item?

Where would be the best place to source one?

Shorty 123,if thats your problem just change the whole starter,i wouldent consider just changing the solenoid a false economy in my opinion.

It's pretty simple to strip down and clean up, which is often all it needs, although the symptoms you describe may mean it's a bit far gone.

Beyond that there are a few varieties available. A couple of Ebay shops are selling them at under £60 just now, someone on here (I forget who) fitted one about six months ago and was very happy with it.

Quite a few of us have been quite happy with the Prestolite units as sold by many LR Indies ~ but havent seen around for a while. They were good value at @£50.
