Chassis treatment - paint/waxoil?

Wheres the best place to go and approx. how much does it cost? Assume it depends how bad the rust is, but a rough idea will do! I live in Derby.

I was planning to waxoil the chassis on mine but a mechanic advised me to check it out first as, if there is any welding pending on the chassis, the coating makes it very hard to work on the car and the coating can burn easily.

I still think it'll save the car long-term.

wax-oil is a nightmare to work on. It come off on everything.

I use POR-15. Nice smooth finish looks like original.

I stripped and recoated my chassis last winter. it was a bugger of a job but worth it in the end. i used smooth hammerite. It's the preparation takes the time though. i was lucky i found only surface rust.
The areas to look out for are;

in font of the radiator-you have to take it out to get at it
The joints in the chassis tubes in front of the engine
The joints in the chassis tubes around the engine and gearbox.-you can only really get at them with the engine out
the high level horizontal tubes either side of the engine that touch the heat protection on the body
the outriggers
i reckon it took about a working week all in. i did post my methodology at the time. hope it helps

I did mine 2 years ago myself. Hammerite/waxoiled. It was a tw*t of a job, especially in the cold, even though it was in the garage. The waxoil was a nightmare too. Ended up waxoiling the garage floor, walls and myself.

Has anyone here managed to set waxoil on fire by getting it too hot from nearby exhausts etc? I'm slathering the stuff over the POR15 but perhaps I'll end up regretting that once the exhaust warms up!

I've painted the exposed sections on mine already.

I used a grey-coloured paint called Galvafroid.

It's much better than Hammerite straight on to the metal.

I planned to put white Hammerite over it but it will be purely cosmetic.

For me the waxoil was an insurance-coating.

I have waxoyled mine, including the chassis rails near the exhaust manifold, and have ghs no problems.
I wire brushed mine thouroughy, then used Waxoyol, I rate it as it contains a rust 'killer', it protexts, and also because you spray it on it 'flows' down the backs of chassis rails that a brush and paint cant get too. Also as it remaons flxible it is less susceptible to getting chipped and allowing water to creep in the crack.
