Plastic boxes on intake system

Hi all!

Only had my '98 Cerb' 4.5 for a month.
On doing my weekly checks on the engine i noticed the plastic boxes on the side of the intake system appear to be cracked and opened up where they are screwed together. I have put some RTV sealer over the gaps as a temporary fix.
Is there a performance upgrade that i can do or should i just get new OE parts?
Any help much appreciated.

Carbon or fibreglass? Either way I'd probably open them up, rough up the area around the crack, and add a thin layer of fibreglass matting and gel. Make sure when it's dry that there's nothing on the planet that could peel it off, or it'll end up inside your engine.

Good point. Think its carbon, certainly looks like it.

Could bodge it up but would rather replace it.
Is it just a collector for the air before it enters the intake of the engine. Not really researched this but i dont know where the throttle discs are either. Maybe they are in this box?
Think i need to get a manual on CD dont i.

A wise man (not sure who) told me that all the airboxes are fibreglass as standard, the ones that look carbon are just for effect only

Not entirely true. I have one real carbon one (confirmed to me by a Carbon specialist) and one fake one. Carbon Al's are versions far far better than either of them though.

Mine came apart in the same place, (just along the join)
I used RTV to seal it together again.

Interesting that they made full carbon ones from the factory
