that normally the police appear to rush to investigte an single allegation of racism, but in the case of Big Brother over 30 complaints to Hertfordshire Police can only elicit the response that they're waiting for Ofcom to investigate? I hadn't realised that Ofcom were the primary crime investigator for Hertfordshire ... I wonder whether the good burghers know?

Streaky

Clearly a senior officer's decision ... so very possibly with political overtones. I wonder who in Endemol is light some cash and may be nominated for an homour.

Because Streaky this programme is being engineered and orchestrated in an attempt to get the danders up of the great unwashed and uneducated so that they sit before their boxes muttering "Gweat innit/Oh mag gawd this aint white" while the makers trot off to the bank.

Jump in the media wallahs with a few oohs and ahhs and all hell is let loose, Parliament gets involved, dipolomatic incidents and after that Goody outburst last night, come weekend we will be at war with India.

How anyone with a modecum of intelligence can purpetuate/watch such utter bloody rubbish beats me.

Goody, is she female or a male docker in drag? Regret that remark - dockers do have a brain.

Shows why we have speed limits???

I quite agree.

I watched last nights with an open mind to see what the furore was about. I did quite a lot of studies in film and also communicational psychology.

The producers are astonishingly clever in editing some of the things that have been said to the *millisecond* to add impact and a context to what has been said. For example:

Shilpa: I dont know why they can be so intolerant....

(very fast cut to other room)

Danielle: I think she should just go back home.

(fast cut to kitchen)

Ian (to Shilpa): Would you like white or brown? (pardon?) Would you like white bread or brown on your sandwich.

Now... It would be highly co-incidental that these three comments occurred at exactly the same time. The cynic in me says that the comments *in different rooms* are edited in such a way a viewer who is used to hearing dialogue from a single source automatically assumes the context of the langauge used. The interesting example is the 'white or brown' - the cut to the kitchen added zero to the 'plot' and was no more then five seconds. The effect is subliminal though.

I wonder if the way that voting may be 'organised' will be so that it is possible to be able to vote for each or all of the alleged perpetrators!?

I think so....!

Oh, I fully understand that. The issue is not with the programme, but with the seeming lack of police response and particularly their deferment to Ofcom as the arbiter of what is racist. Neither Ofcom nor the police have this option, it is solely for the courts to decide what is racist. Hertfordshire Police website (www.herts.police.uk/report/racist.htm) says:

The police use the following definition when recording a racist incident:

"A racist incident is any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person"

This means if you or any person believes what happened was committed against persons or property because of race or colour, REPORT IT

Any person can say it’s racist
The incident need not be a crime
No incident is trivial
Can be committed against persons or property
All racist incidents will be recorded

OK, it says it will be "recorded", not "investigated", but public expectation (fueled by the press) is that all racist comments are investigated. Indeed, that people making allegedly racist comments are arrested - regardless of whether the police officer feels the comments are such.

Contrast this with the experience of columnist and broadcaster, Robin Page who was arrested on suspicion of stirring up racial hatred after making a speech at a pro-hunting rally in November which began: "If there is a black, vegetarian, Muslim, asylum-seeking, one-legged, lesbian lorry driver present…I want the same rights as you." Or Helen and Joe Roberts, from Fleetwood, who complained about taxpayers' money being used for leaflets about gay rights and called homosexuality "immoral" and who were subsequently quizzed and lectured by two police officers in their own home. Of course, it may be that because charges against Mr Page were dropped and because the Roberts recently received £10,000 compensation from Wyre Borough Council and Lancashire Constabulary in an out-of-court settlement, Hertfordshire Police might have decided to stand away from rapid intervention in the Big Brother case.

BTW, if the production team are manipulating snippets of conversation to give the appearance of racist comments, then they are open to allegations of racism.

Frankly I'm glad the Police didn't waste their time investigating this. Who gives a shit about BB ... there are far more important things to be bothered about.

DVD, you have never uttered a truer word!
The mentality shown on this type of programme utterly sickens me to my stomach and is the essence of the problems in our British society.
It elevates individuals with no class, personal spirituality or integrity whose only desire is to become a "celebrity" or "rich and famous".
They seriously depress the intellectual tone of the nation and contribute absolutely nothing towards the aspirations of any members of the community, and in particular young, impressionable people.
This recent fiasco is accompanied by the news that Beckham is now earning roughly 75K a DAY for kicking a ball and the winner of the Premiership this year will earn an EXTRA 50 million, whilst the loser has to be content with only an EXTRA 30 mill!
What in the name of God is happening to our society, and why has it gone like this?

One of my friends was on Big Brother. paperbag

The heavy and imaginative editing was one of the first things we discussed when he got out.
I assume all TV is like this.

And the idiots that watch this dross, no offence to anyone who has watched it once. But it's not just big brother, it's all the other rubbish they put on as well, vote for this vote for that, it'll only cost you £1 a minute, and people fall for it every time. If people didn't watch there wouldn't be any of this crap on television. ( deep breath and off the soap box before i really get going.)

Couldn't agree more; chavs in a cage for a week and one wonders why these fat ugly impolite uneducated mental midgets and wannabe "stars" get slightly bored and annoyed by the pettiness of the other chavs in the same cage......
Chav TV, made by calculating chavs (Endemol), for chavs who watch it....anyone who switches such crap on and keeps it on after 2 minutes must be either severely mentally/socially challenged or just plain dumb!!!
Vote with the off switch!!!!

It always makes me laugh that people who hate big brother always think they're intellectually superior to those who watch it. Get over yourselves.

ps - I don't watch it.
