Whats this light for?
Is it battery, mines started to coming on once the car is turned on, then goes off about about 3 secs as the revs rise above 800rpm on idle, but also once a while it flashes on-off while am driving, at any speed, but if am in traffic for say 10 mins, the it will not come on, sometimes for the rest of the day.
Car is running perfect with no loss of power.

PLease someone tell me whats the light for ?

Thanks

Is yours the early type LED arrangement with red at top, amber in the middle, red at bottom, if so amber is oil pressure warning, one red (IIRC bottom) was alarm, and the other red is the ignition light. If it lights and only goes out at 800rpm it probably is the ignition light.

It is possible you have a 100A fuse that would be the first thing to check, if you do it will be near the starter motor (just follow the cables).

Check the wires to the alternator / the fan belt ~ but more than likely need the alternator serviced. You can service them yourself / buy a replacement or leave it to any autoelectrician (they are a pretty generic part).

Isn't it the handbrake warning light?

I'm trying to remember in mine... Either that or the ice warning light scratchchin confused

I know the handbrake light in mine is a bit hit or miss...

Have you a description of the symbol on the light?

For cars from about summer 1995 onwards...
If there are three LED's, the top one is green and thats the indicator light, the middle one is oil pressure and the bottom one (almost hidden behind the steering cowl) is the alarm/immobiliser light.

On the radio panel you then have two clusters of lights, those to the left of the radio are the direction indicators (in addition to the LED directly infront of you)

There of 6 lights to the right of the radio, two rows of three.
The top row are (left to right) MIL light (malfunction indicator light from the ECU), brake warning light and hand brake light
The bottom row again left to right are fog light, high beam and sidelights.

Quite what it means if the alarm light is on while your driving I'm not sure, sorry!

Iain

Check your rear view mirror for blue flashing lights?

The bottom red light on mine is the Handbrake Light and the one above is the Ice warning Detector which has now gone open circuit and stays on permanently even in the height of summer.

Yours is @4years down the development line from penas (assuming your profiles are correct); there were significant changes in the dash / led arrangement.... later cars used the common rounded alloy surrounds instead of the classic recessed bevels!

thanks guys..
Mine is a very early 93 model.

Top: Red (Oil)
Middle: Amber (Ice warning)
Bottom: Red (Battery & ??)

I had a feeling it was the alarm light.
The thing is my alarm module is installed under seat/carpet...as we know this can get damp.

But then why does it come on and stay on for like 3 secs when I start the car, but if a blip the trottle it goes away.

Am gonna check the alternator route, but I have no idea about where the 100amp fuse is.

Mine is a 93 also. Top light is alarm light, middle amber is oil pressure, bottom is ignition light. The bottom light on mine acted just like yours when my alternator was on it's way out.

You will not have a 100A fuse mentioned above. That came on later cars.

Nice One...
I better get my alternator sorted then.

It's only about 1.5 years old as well...

Mines 93 & agree with Paul (like I said first time).

If I was you this weekend...
Turn ignition on, pull off small spade on alt = alt light will go out.
Pull off spade (or undo nut) on oil pressure switch = oil light will go out.

Then you will know for sure which leds are for what. Its not uncommon for them to be rewired / mixed up...

Bottom light on mine is the charging/alternator/fanbelt light. Mine has done the flicking on and off trick too. First, cheapest and easiest thing to check is your 100amp fuse and connections. See the bible for fuse location but basically it's in a black box about 3 inches in length and attached to the right chassis member, just behind the starter motor, accessible from under the car only. If that's all OK, then it could be a faulty alternator assuming fanbelt/drivebelt is OK.

No 100Amp on mine.
Am waiting for the weather to warm up a bit then I can have a good look at the alternator & fanbelt

I THINK ITS THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT ! MINE DOES THE SAME ON START WITH NO GAS . GIVE IT A LIGHT BLIP AND IT SEEMS FINE. NEVER COMES ON WHEN DRIVING. TRY SOME NEW OIL !

If it's the oil pressure light it will stay out of you rev the engine and switch off. If it's the no charge warning light then it will glow while the engine spins down. You really need to know which it is, because the implications if it comes on are quite different.

Pretty scary posts like 'I think its my oil light' ..... If in doubt please take the time to check as I outlined above. Its no good checking your 100A fuse when the engine has chewed itself to pieces ~ there is a big difference between a 20p fuse / £100 alt and a £xxxx engine rebuild.
