My 90k miles Griff is likely to need a new camshaft soon and I've noticed TVR Power are offering a sports Cam upgrade for around £1,600 (www.tvrpower.co.uk/5.litre.full.php). Has anyone else had this work carried out and is there a noticeable improvement in performance? Any other feedback e.g. post-work reliability issues, is the car still ok in heavy traffic/low revs etc?

Are there any other companies offering a similar service for less in the North UK/Midlands (I am a Yorkshireman afterall!)?

Cheers.

Why will it need a new cam? my cam's on 114k miles and shows no signs of giving up yet

Ah, was wondering this also as I bought a Chimaera 4.3 with 106,000 miles on the odo and no evidence in the stack of receipts I got with it that the engine has been touched apart from the usual 'external' stuff (manifolds, gaskets and oil seals). As far as I can tell yet, it's sweet as a sweet young thing in Sweetsville, yet the Bible metions that it's unlikely for an RV8 to get at 100K without needing camshaft work...

Mine's at 104k with the original cam. It's about to get changed along with the chassis work I'm doing.

I was told at the last service it would need a new cam within the next few ooo miles - engine rattling when starts up.

I won't comment on whether you need a new cam and whether a rattling on startup is proof that you do, but I will advise you to get some other quotes.

Jamie's a good choice for midlands based customers, he's just of the M1 close to Silverstone .. I've been doing a bit of work with him recently and his engines are VERY strong performers

I saw mine when it came out at 55k...flat as a pancake. You're lucky to get double that! Different strength valve springs fitted at different times? Reason for premature wear on most is excessively tight springs.

If you have the cam done, you'll almost certainly need to sort out the fuelling, which is well worth doing anyway.

You can get joolz (trackcar) to fit you a nice Emerald ECU that will sort the fuelling hehe

I think you have a full range of recommendations here for who should do the work. Just ensure you get more than one opinion of what actually 'needs' doing and two or three quotes for doing the work before making up your mind as to where you are going.

Before you get anything done why not have a compression test first may save a lot of wonga.

Finally - someone giving the best advice.

You cannot beat a good hot C/R test and if gives uneven results - take the plenum off and take a look.
