Discretion exists in Ireland
Discussion
I was just stopped for speeding by an unmarked Garda car, first saw a car approaching quickly behind me on a country road, I slowed down and then the flashers behind the grille went on, slowed to a stop on a straight and the Garda came up behind me and showed me the printout on his hair-dryer 115kmh on an 80kmh country road
, just asked to see my licence, which I gave him, went back to his car, came back told me to slow down "a bit" and that was it
I've only been reading this site for a few days and I paid close attention to the stuff about attitude, I didn't moan at all or offer any lame excuses. I can hardly beleive atitude and some luck is all that's needed to escape prosecution.

Discretion exists in at least one force I know about in England. The word is - use your mirrors. If BiB have been tailing you for miles and you didn't notice you can expect trouble but if you clock them straight away it's a different story. Standard police drivers are expected to look in their mirrors every 7 seconds.

Yeah I learned all about the attitude test on my first day in the job.
If the guy acts like a tosser its a ticket.
If he is Mr normal aye ok you got me, well what the hell we all drive a bit fast at times its no big deal. All the best now. Cheers. No ticket.
Might be wrong but thats discretion. Our greatest power.

Where abouts in Ireland are you Nick?
County Cork,
your right GentlyBently, stubborn people like me if ticketed, drive around moaning about it and trying to beat the system by speeding some more, whereas now I'd be horrified to be stopped by the same guy in the next few months for the same offence so I intend to comply
