Buying a TVR...

Hi all a little help needed...I want to take the plunge and get me a TVR preferably a cerb or a tuscan but am a total novice to these cars. Looking on the web about them they don't seem to be the most reliable of cars and there seems to be all sorts of warm up prodcedures to adhere to so can can anyone impart some wisdom as to buying these cars and the looking after of them.They seem to quite like the service shop...which could be a hassle as I think the nearest TVR shop is Charles Hurst in Belfast.Can your local mechanic take care of them?? (forgive the dumb ass questions I'm only new!!) Plus whats all this about the engine rebuild you hear about on the tuscans?? That can't be good?? And lastly tuscan vs. cerb what would you recommend (not too worried regarding seats)

Run away. Now. Just run. Dont look back. Dont turn round. Look ahead. Erase all thoughts of owning one of these monsters. They are uncomfortable. They leak. They smell. They are loud and they are brash. They dont absorb bumps and they scrape over even the smallest of indents in the road. Forget parking in multi-story car parks. The heaters dont work. The demists dont work. Heated rear windscreen - forget it.
If you have a life now you can say goodbye to it. Cerberism will take over your life. When you're not driving it or standing by the side of the road waiting for the pick up truck you will be sat in it in the garage dreaming of driving it. When your not in the garage with it you will sat at your computer reading about it. Your girlfriend/wife will get fed up of you. She wont want to go out in it cause she will hate the attention it gets. She wont be able to get out of it without showing her knickers. She will get annoyed when you refuse to let her drive it. Only you can drive it.
You will spend rediculous amounts of money on it on things like wheels and tyres and suspension and light upgrades and exhausts. Every wierd sound will send you haywire. Every hiccup will drive you to paranoia.
Oh what the hell Ive had mine for 2 weeks and I LOVE IT !!! JUST GO AND BLOODY BUY ONE.

You own a car that you don't just have to drive but it gives you pleasure everytime you walk into the garage. Unreliable - no - I've not spent anything mechanically on mine, only £20 to flush some new clutch fluid through. I've done 4K miles before the bad weather stopped too much play. Oh and £45 for some oil.

OK A little tongue in cheek, but let's take the points:
Uncomfortable - not mine. We ran upto the lake district in October (4.5 hours) and only briefly stopped for a toilet break. It was quicker coming back - downhill? and we didn't stop. Felt like we could easily have kept going as well. Cruised at 95 (ish) all the way easily. That was 1000 miles in 5 days and we drove all around the lakes in it
Averaged 27mpg. Bumps - nah - I take mine into work at Newbury over some of the potholled, speedhumped roads going and it's no problem.
Multistory car parks - well car parks anywhere really just because you can't trust the plonkers who park next to you. When you do park it it's the furthest away space and parked over two slots.
Heaters - My heater works, my aircon works, my demister works brilliantly front and rear.
A huge boot - even big enough for my missus to go away with for 5 days
The noise - oh that's just automotive porn. Find a local tunnel and you turn around and go around again.
The performance - be careful as it bites - I've had it sideways under acceleration but whooshhhh.
If you want a car that just puts a grin on your face - this is it. Honest you won't regret it if you get a good one like mine.
- and it's no ordinary RED either - but when did TVR ever do an ordinary colour?? This may help for servicing.

Seems that you are putting far to much thought into it, get out there now and get yourself a Cerbera 4.5 LW, after 2000 model, they are by far the best in all areas.

One other thing - and this is gonna sound odd - dont be put off by this forum.
When I first set out to buy I read with interest this site but it seemed to me that all I ever read were issues.
By its nature this site is a fantastic workshop manual and we do post issues. Seldom do we report the good things. I dont know how many owners are part of this site hundreds I guess. They dont all post problems. No news is good news.
From my point of view its the most exciting car I have ever owned.
