I've been having problems with my connection speeds for months now. I was just on the Orange website as I'm thinking of changing over to them, and they prompt you to put in your house phone number to assess what speeds you are able to receive.

It said that I was able to receive 2Mbps for my number (not for a long time rolleyes). I put in my father's home number, who lives not more than a 100 meters behind me, and he was able to receive between 6 and 8 Mbps. Why is that?

All the numbers in this town start with 7 and the second number is either 8, 6, 5 or 7. His second digit is 8 and mine is 6. Would this have something to do with it, like a different exchange or something? If so, could I change my number/exchange to get the better speeds?

Cheers.

Cable twixt house and exchange doesnt lie in a straight line, neccesarily, so the distance from exchange to your house could be far greater in reality.

Changing providers wont neccesarily mean an increase in speed as its all provided by BT unless you use an LLU provider and even then you wont notice a massive difference if any.

You cant change exchange, the one you are physically wired to is the one you are physically wired to and thats that pretty much.

The strange thing is, the bloke that lives directly opposite me has a different second digit and is getting 8 mbps. That's about 20 metres.

Is there any website where you can find the location of your exchange?

Hopefully it will mean that I'll get faster speeds than 20 - 150 kbps that I'm getting now.

Only a physical line test will tell you the actual line capability. All the online thing does is look up what you're connected to and make some assumptions.

www.samknows.com will give you all the information you need to know regarding your exchange and the services available etc.

But say for example you are connected to one end of the street, and 100 doors down the other side of the street is his connection?
