My 400 goes in for its service shortly. Wondering what can be done to make it just a tad louder. Looking for a little more metallic sound in the exhaust note. I've seen posts about taking the Cats out. What are the consequences of doing this?

Also are there any straight forward power upgrades to be had on the 400 without switching cams, heads off ect etc.

Thanks

max

ps I'll prempt all the smart replies who suggest buying a 500!

Volume - Sleved Pipes, Chrry bombs, Remove wadding.

Performance - ACT Smooth Bore Induction Kit, ACT Inlet manifold and Trumpet Kit, Good RR session or ECU Remap and Chip.

That's about the short of it.

Depends on your perspective of straight forward. The 4.0 was, correct me if wrong, only modified over the range rover unit by changing the cam? Lots can be done to the engine. Agree that inlet manifolds and trumpets plus remap on rr will make an improvement. Simple DIY stuff too. Looking at 400 quid for manifold and trumpets, plus 700 for rollin road and tornado chip. Didn't want to sell mine either to go to 5.0. So changed the engine instead! Ok to do this on later models as brakes and chassis are same as 5.0 anyway....

Cam and followers are around £180 from real Steel, that will see the biggest results so why not?

You could end up paying a lot more by the time you've got new timing gear (if the cam's worn, the timing gear is probably due too), if you need a vernier gear you could end up spending around £500 just for the parts.

louder & more metallic - sounds like you want it sleeved. Mine was done a while ago at Austec & sounds like a powerboat.

Yes I had teh austec exhaust treatment and that did make it sound like a power boat.

It doesn't sound quite as 'nice' as before, but not spitting metal either. I would also consider a double plenum, which in conjunction makes it sound awesome. Ditch the pre cats too

My [500] exhaust is on a website somwhere pre/post, I'll see if I can find it.
