Hi, Does anyone know of a company that sells a GPS speed camera locator that has a decent database? I only ask because I have so far tried the Road Pilot and now the Tom Tom One BGB (with camera database added) I have to say both databases were awful! With the Road pilot I found myself paying them for me to tell them where the cameras were!

I see there are snoopers, road angels, the list goes on. But surely it's the database that matters.

I liken it to being given a map of the locations of mines in a minefield. Being told that there might be a few missing from the map is hardly going to instil confidence.

Does the government pay these comopanies to have poor databases or they just charging us for a length of old rope?

Thanks, A friend of mine has tried that one but says it's less comprehensive than the tom tom one. Maybe it's our local area thats not covered well on their database. It's very frustrating indeed. I recently changed my car and left all my laser jamming equiptment on the previous car on the basis that later this year they are going to ban all but the GPS devices. A comprehensive databse of ALL camera sites will be just the ticket!

If they are missing - report them. There have been some tests I have read that say PGPSW is better than TomTom database.

Mmmm, Maybe I should add this ones as well. Does it cover mobile sites as well as fixed?

Yes. THe thing with the PocketGPSWorld database is that it is maintained by volunteers and hosted by PGPSW virtually at cost. So if your area isn't covered well YOU can do something about it. Get involved.

tom tom, garmin et al are an unofficial database; they rely on people telling them where cameras are, hence not always accurate. One such as road angel, snooper etc use the official governement one, but the downside is you have to pay. So swings and rounabouts really

Hi, I have updated my tom tom with the pocket GPS database. I have to say I am very very impressed. I think the friend that used it had not used it in the last year or so hence his info was outdated.

It's way better than the Tom Tom one (Which I had to pay for) and has catagories for Gatso, SPECS, Temporary, mobile and red light. I have checked the maps of local areas where I am familiar with all the sites and cant see any missing as yet.

I will test it on the road this week and see what I think then. Now that the 'No new camera sites for 2006' campaign by the government is officially over we can expec to see them add loads more camera sites. This will mean an up to date database is essential.

Thanks for your help

Yea, I think they installed them at the latter end of 06 and turned them on in the first 2 weeks of Jan. All the partnerships said that no new cameras would be put up in 2006. Our local one advertises this heavily on the web site as a really 'great' thing. I guess now they feel they have catching up to do! I remember the head of our local partnership getting pretty livid on the local news when New Labour (bless them) announced that there would be no new cameras in 2006. Visit www.safecam.org.uk to see what I mean. (The smugness of his face on the home page is likely to make you puke though)

I've had an Origin B2 for a few years now and the camera database has never been other than spot on. They use various sources; police and county council websites, user input, and a large team of full time dedicated agents travelling over the road network.
