well my budget is on what i can get. dont like paying loads for littel return. 5k would be tops. but first thing. is to find out what on the market. also any other ideas are welcome. 0-100 is what i want to improve. top speed is not on the list.
Do you want to keep it 4.0 litre?Do you want too keep it n/a or would you like forced induction?
you have a lot of choices on that budget

I could be biased, but in your position I'd be nagging Joo and Mike about their proposed turbo conversions. I'm pretty sure they will try to offer a little bit more oomph than the coventry compressor (which isnt yet available on preserp I believe). Recent posts seem to be favouring forced induction for Power improvements.

Is it only straight line acceleration that interests you? Not interested in handling, brakes?
well i got a shopping list. And on the list. 1st engine upgrade. 2nd brakes front have been upgrade to 500 all ready. 3rd handling but saying that it’s got new avo setup. and sitting on 17" spiders. and is a good ride. i have thought about this question. do i keep the rover 4.0 or do i take another route. do i take a slp6 or a agp route. i think i keep with the rover engine. and look at supercharge or turbo. but still going to look at all options. got to find every option out there. and see what’s wins me over.

Lots of options then
.If you fancy the idea of forced induction, then speak to Boostedls1 or Trackcar-something very nice coming shortly i believe
.You wont get the AJP done for £5k,unless you can do all the spanner work, and fabrication yourself?V8Developments can do lots of good work if you want to keep N/A,but start by binning the Lucas system first(they can also do this),as it'll enable you to make more power and save money! The last option has to be considering just upgrading to a 5 litre, which you could easily do for £5k forgot to add-wouldn't even consider the S6-putting that in a griff would be like giving Bo Derek a d*ck- all the right looks, but under the cover it would have completely the wrong equipment!!

i did look at the 500. and to be fair. Might be wrong here. but down on paper the 500 did not stand out from the 400. i think it was just a secound fast to 60. around the same top speed. and another 100 bhp. and i brought this 400. because i fell in love with it. and cost is not a problem. its going to be a car that i build up. so i going to enjoy every min of it. and going to keep it for a long time.

I think you're wrong there. The 500 isn't just faster than the 400, it's quite dramatically faster. Of course you can have good and bad examples of both, but other things being equal the difference really is quite noticeable.
Yup - I've had both and the improvements from the 4.0 to the 500 extend way beyond the very significant performance increase. The later car honestly feels like its had an extra decade of development and that 1.0 second from 0-60 really feels like the 25% improvement it is in the mid range.

I've been looking into the "bang for bucks" on my 4L and speaking to everybody in the business, it's not difficult to spend loads of money for little return IMHO but it depends what you expect.
Here is my take
1) Ported heads, hotter cam, ACT trumpets, Emerald, rolling road session
ITRO 2.5K = 250/260 BHP
2) TVR Power S/C ITRO 4k = 320bhp
I do realise that Joo and others are going to be in the mix but having seen the thorough testing carried out by Power and driven the S/C, I like the smooth delivery of power and wonder if the turbo route is going to make the cars even more tail happy because of the harsher delivery of power.

being in a similar situation myself soon I was wondering if you have also looked at V8 developments and increasing capacity as that was the route I was thinking of going down for my 4.3?
I was quite impressed with these quotes in another thread from a well known source, so excuse me reproducing them, but I think they say it all....

talking about a twin turbo Griff (getting close to 500bhp barrier) which should improve your 0-100 time:
"i think what impresses me more than anything else though is the driveability, seriously this things drives like a pussy cat around town, no jerking/hunting etc... due to wild cams but still makes huge amounts of power!!"
and
"it has certainly made me think about blowers as opposed to chasing your ass with n/a engines!"
Maybe a chat with Rob would be worthwhile ~ he has probably had first hand experience of most of the alternatives you would be interested in.

Personally, you've got a 4.0 so keep the character of the 4.0. I'd go for a cam, head work, induction kit and ecu chip first of all, to try and get the power at the top end and maybe increase the rev limit. The benefit of the 4.0 is it's revvability, so take advantage of that. If you want to improve performance through torque, then really swapping for a 5.0 is the best option. But you don't want to do that, and I can see why.
Ultimately the engine might need to come apart and be blue-printed and balanced, but I'd have thought all the above could be dome well within a budget of £5000 (probably half that if you have it all done at once) and should net 280-300 bhp if done right.
Don't get hung up on paper figures though, the driving seat is the best place for comparison. And keep that pre-cat character!
Yours isn't the blue ex-Sportmotive car is it?
