Is it under waranty? If so, go phone Dell.
if it's not, I'd suggest going and getting another one, a DVD-ROM can be brought for £20 so it's a cheap way of checking if the thing is dead.

If it doesn't read disks (try booting from a LiveCD or the windows restore disk) and/or the BIOS can't detect it then the thing is dead.

do you have you dell driver cd ?
else uninstall driver, remove entry from device settings and reboot, should prompt for the Dell CD OR Windows Disc.

yup it will be that. bet u installed quicktime, itunes or both recently? I use to support this issue around about 20 times a week and removing the upperfilters should work without the lower filters but if no joy then remove both
i say just to remove upper filter as lower filter is needed by some writing software.

To be perfectly honest, I've installed / uninstalled Nero, iTunes / QuickTime and a load of other stuff over the years. I've yet to see anything disable Windows's ability to read a CD from a working drive (I've seen stuff that will disable it's internal burning engine but...). I don't doubt that something crufting up the ASPI layer will do that though... just that the circumstances are quite rare.

To eliminate the possibility. Boot. From. CD. Doesn't matter what (hell the Dell restore CD will do) does it boot? Does it start to walk you through installing Windows? If it grinds and very very slowly tries to do stuff... the drive is knakkered.

Is the machine under waranty? Yes? No?
Do you have £20? Yes? No? Because that's how much a new DVD-ROM costs. £23 for a DVD+/- R/RW

Can you read CDs, but not record them? There's a checkbox in the CD-RW properties labelled something like "Allow CD recording on this drive", which might be worth checking.

Sorry if this I'm teaching you to suck eggs.

Fair enough - I had that exact problem when I rebuilt my vaio one time, and that was how I solved it, but there's obviously more to it in your case.

I won't say how long it took me to discover that check-box existed. paperbag

Is the burn/write button active ?
that sounds like it's working and just telling you to insert a disc.

Where? Where what? Your Windows install CD? dunno, where ever you left it mate
The BIOS, tap F2 during boot and it should appear.
Where to buy another one from? Novatech, Scan, Dabs, PC World sell OEM equipment.

That's very odd. Are you just trying to use XP's built in burning engine or something more robust like Nero?

I've had exactly the same problem with my cd writer for a while now and haven't been able to solve it. That probably wasn't what you wanted to hear! The nearest I got was reinstalling it, that got it working once and then it stopped again. I have my suspicions it may be due to me having some games installed with the starforce copy protection system (GTR and GTL) as I have heard of that doing similar things to other peoples pc's. Removing those games though didn't revive it.

Removing the games, doesn't remove StarForce. Google and you'll find links to removal tools and guides. It's a pretty evil piece of malware to be honest (no, stuff that bollox's up a PC as often as StarForce isn't copy protection).
