Apart from ctrl-alt-del my computer skills are limited, I want to upgrade the memory on my laptop to 1gb, which, judging by the slots will require 2 x 512mb sticks.

The laptop is an Acer TravelMate 290, the sticker on the front says '256mb DDR SDRAM' but when I google it, it doesn't look the same as what in in my machine.

Thanks in advance
Gaz

try googling "DDR SO-DIMM" or "DDR SODIMM" and you should get the right thing appearing.

No worries. I'd recommend the folks over at Crucial for the parts your require. Most laptops I've seen actually have Crucial stickers on the RAM (even inside things like Dell's) and they will definetly do SO-DIMM format memory sticks for your laptop

If you go to Crucial's website www.crucial.com/uk/ and run their system scanner, it will tell you what memory you have and tell you what can be put in. You have to run the scanner in Internet explorer though.
