Just got a wireless lap top and rather than have it connected to my HP with wires which I'll have to keep pulling off and on I thought why not get a wireless printer. Do they communicate with the wireless part of the laptop or do you connect a transmitter into a USB so they communicate with each other? Any recommendations for a printer that is econimical on ink and good quality etc?

Can't answer your question I'm afraid, but that's got me thinking on how to make my existing printer wireless.

It would be handy to have the printer relocated to a different room. I'm off to trawl google to see what I can find.

Recently got one of these http://uk.shopping.com/xPF-Dell-3300 to use with my Dell printer.

Works very well. You can also scan and copy remotely. Ink looks expensive at around £20 per refill as the printer was only £50.

Dunno if you can use it with other printers but I don't see why not.

Assuming you have broadband with either a wireless router or access point for your laptop then the printer only needs to be wired to the router and you can send print jobs to it via your wireless laptop. This of course assumes either a network card in your HP printer (or external jetdirect box) or a print server built into your router.

We have an HP 6980 - it'll never set the world alight, but it's ok.

You can most likely make your existing printer wireless. I just did exactly that, using an Apple Airport Express.
It is £65 though, but the price has just been reduced from £90 or so.. It's quite a useful little gadget it more ways than one, IE not just for printing. Plus it is not just for Macs but PC's too.
Very easy to set up.. All you need to do is make sure your printer is supported by it, but it does support a lot, including my ageing but perfectly functional Epson 760.

You can pick up a wireless print server from D-Link for about £45, set that up with an IP Address and connect the printer to that and away you go, you won't need a PC turned on all the time either.
