Matt told me the other day that he had used a 5d for a job, and it was better than his old 1ds2, which sounds like the kind of thing matt might say. However, this happens to have coincided with me using a 5d for work as I wait for a replacement to my recently thieved 1ds2. To ut a long story short - I think he may be right. There wasn't a single function I missed yesterday that the 1ds2 had and the 5d doesn't, and the noise (non existant at 400, very very useable at 1600), auto wb, and flash exposure are significantly better on the 5d.
As to whether the 1ds2 is woth 3x the 5d - the anwer is so clear cut it's not really worth discussing. But with the choice of being given either (thankyou insurance company) I might actually go for the 5d.
Hopefully someone finds this vaguely interesting. Here's a picture too, taken at ISO 1600

Incidentally, I'm told it's due to pixel pitch. The optimum pitch is said to be 9 microns - the pixel pitch of the 1DS Mark II is 7.2 microns, and the 5D's is 8.2 microns (that of the Nikon D2X is about 5.5 microns).

i would say that a 5d has less noise at 1600 than a d2x does at 400

I've had some amazing usable results at 3200 as well. Saved my bacon in a very poorly lit church, where no flash was allowed.
Fortunately, i enjoy intimately both the 5D and the 1Ds mkII.
Ten shoots out of ten would i prefer the 1D as the "main" body, without any shadow of a doubt.
Motorsport/continuous shooting with the 5D is not so hot due to the slow transfer of buffer speed to the CF card, and then of course, there is the weatherproofing issue, build quality etc etc.
That's without even considering also the comparitive weight issue.
With all due respect, i feel that borrowing a 1D just for a day/week/ shoot, will not allow you to really develop a bond and a love affair, (as i have) and subsequently get the best out of it, or fully comprehend it's capabilities.

d yeah, i only used the 1ds2 for 18 months and c.100 weddings...
Well...to add my opinion. I would say that I prefer the 5d because it is less conspicuous and lighter because of the smaller body. I also prefer it because there is less between you and the photo you are trying to take which i prefer. I also think that the metering is a little more accurate than the 1ds2. I did some tests with the 5d evaluative metering vs the zone system and spot metering off a grey card and found the 5d handled most situations pretty well. It definately did the job that i needed it for.

With all due respect dcw@pr,

To be fair, you too should have twigged to David's line of work and reference to the 5D's abilities in that line of work.
Sorry to see you go so soon - if you stick around you're sure to receive plenty more abuse (it's a sign of fondness around these parts)

Come on there is no need for that... as far as this forum goes Dave is one of the more level headed normal ones. I don' think their is any attitude here, just a misunderstanding. You misread what he wrote, and he corrected you, thats all!
