Blimey - starter again

Had a new starter fitted only about 100 miles ago. Just had to call out the AA, as I was stuck with a click only. Tried for a while, and just a click each time.

Once AA were on route, it started (and managed to blat home). Does this mean my started has had it already?

When I bought my car the previous owner was going to change the started as he thought it was knackered.

I haggled off a nice few bob because of it.

The same starter is in there and the "hold your finger on the start button 'til it starts" trick works every time.

And when I spray the "big fuse" with contact cleaner spray it even solves this problem.

Have you tried this?

I had to hold my start button at one stage today for at least 3 minutes to get it started.

Check your battery is charging properly

I've had a starter that only lasted a week.

Coincidentally on replacing it, the battery also needed swapping. I could swear the low cranking of the original duff battery caused the starter failure, but can't prove it.

If your battery is on its way out, or low on charge it can affect the electronics. Strange things start to happen, but when shes fully charged they seem to of disappeared. An acumate does help if you don't use it much. Worked for my Cerb.

The big fuse can develop hair line cracks that will reduce it's ability to pass high currents. It may be worth replacing it.

It can. If the starter does not turn at the correct speed (low battery) each winding on the starter heats up because it is under load for longer and can then burn out.
