Battery had been left disconnected due to discharge, when reconnected the central locking wont work with key or remote and the engine wont crank. when the ignition is switched on it chirps 10 times and ER appears on the temp display.I'm certain it's some sort of security system default. No problems before even if battery was disconnected and reconnected. Battery is new fully charged and tested. The engine will turn over as normal with live feed direct to starter (but wont fire). Any ideas ?

Get the battery tested, check for fuel pressure at the rails, check for spark, check the starter relay (left, front of engine bay [row of 4 relays, behind airbox], black, closest to the wing) then check the fuses for the ECM, BCU and Security & Locking modules.

Try a good battery big enough to cope. Don't use jump leads from a running engine. If doesn't work key on locking would have thought must be battery.

Thanks for the replies so far, the battery is new and definitely ok in fact by feeding directly to the starter it spins it over no problem, it seems to have gone into some kind of security lockdown by having the battery disconnected for a while. I am a mechanic and have done all the usual tests regarding power getting through the system. This doesn't seem to be a bad connection problem as power is available to everything except the central locking and starter.I have noticed a couple of other X300 owners on other forums have had almost exactly the same problem but if they fixed it they didn't add the solution to the thread, I have emailed them directly and am waiting for a reply.

If you have access to WDS or IDS you can check to see if the "Key in ignition" and "O.K. to start" signals are being sent. I looked at GTR for you and tried to get some info from the workshop manual in the security section but it was restricted access for Rest of World cars.

No real need for the rolleyes smiley as from your post we have know idea what level of expertize is and with Jaguar "no starts" you always begin at the battery....

Sorry no offence meant I should have used confused, but I was rolling my eyes at the time trying to think of other solutions hence just clicked on that one. I don't have access to WDS or IDS I usually solve most probs by process of elimination or OBD if available,I have got Jag tis type read only disc but this doesn't help I'll try to get hold of some software as I have link cables and interface for laptop. The only time I ever really get stumped is with security systems and this is normally due to people hacking about trying to fit stereos, remote starters or extra security etc so at least you know where to start. This is my own vehicle and was running fine beforehand (owned 2 years)I am no specialist but I have owned and serviced various Jags over the years and have undertaken major repairs on customer vehicles. My current fleet includes this X300 3.2 Sov a late 3.2 XJ40 and an XJ8 3.2 Sport.

Update - central locking now decided to work with fob and key - still wont crank !!! Is there a security reset sequence other than the remote learning. When I try this (pressing valet switch 5 times etc) the orignal 10 chirps stop and are replaced by 5 of a different tone with flashing dash lights. If all else fails I may hire it out as a mobile disco (on a trailer)!!!
