A report in the Mail On Sunday says that fire engines in Yorkshire are to
be fitted with CCTV cameras for the safety and security of their crews.
A fine sentiment, and a bloody good idea.

The article goes on to say that the footage from the cameras,
which start working as soon as the fire engine leaves the garage on a
shout, could be linked to ANPR databases, or at least used to track uninsured
drivers. Good again.
Illegally parked vehicles, bus lane abusers etc could all be collared using the
new system - not in real time, but when someone goes through the footage.
All good stuff really.

The footage will also be used to determine blame in accidents involving the
fire engine.

But, will the footage be used/accessible to defend motorists who get the fine
when moving across/into junctions on a red light when a 30 ton, water filled,
red box on wheels comes blaring up behind us, with blues and twos going????

<sarcasticmode>
Ah, I thought not

Of course not!

that would deny the SCP of the chance to make another £60.

They will probably use the film to identify the cars that did cross the red light ti get out of the way!

there are two flashes on red light cameras - the first says you've crossed the line - the second is to see if you actually crossed the junction - unless you actually cross the junction you'll be fine - so don't pull too far across the junction when letting them through

Second flash is to verify your vehicle was moving (and confirm its speed?).

I was under the impression you get done simple as.There have been topics on here before about this saying you will and people have been ticketed for this. The rule was they have to navigate the junctions not you moving out the way.I did try this for the police one day as i could not go forward over the line or move left (car to my side)or right(fence in middle of road)they turned there lights and siren off then when the lights went to green they put them on again i moved over and they thanked me which i am told is what they should do.

If I were in need of one of the emergency Services I would like to think that people would be allowed to move out of the way to let tham past!

It seems a bit censoredish to do someone for performing an hunanitarian act!

But i suppose £60 will help the censoredsleep at night.

this has been the argument all along that people could need their help but the law does not allow you to move out of the way.If you do move for them you could end up with 3 points. Its mad i know but what do you do.

Great!

So next time plod comes speeding up behind me with his Blues and 2s he can just censored right off and wait his turn.

Fire and ambulance can go past though!

Correct.

There is a petition in respect of motorists letting emergency vehicles past by going through red lights, add your name.

You have that bass-ackwards. You can run a red light if directed by a BiB, but not otherwise.

Isn't there ambiguity about what constitutes being "directed by" a BIB?
That is, an officer standing in the road and making hand signals is directing traffic, but an officer in a car with B&2s switched on is not necessarily doing so?

Bib sitting behind you is not directing you to cross the junction. He can’t see if it is safe for you to cross or not. BiB standing in the road has control of your safety.

Offence is committed if the leading edge (or was it wheels?)of your vehicle crosses the white line after the lights are against you. It does not remove the offence if you do not complete your journey accross the whole junction.

Also, if your (let's say) front wheels are over the line before the lights change - say, in a traffic jam - then you are "in" the controlled space and entitled to complete the journey accross the junction and not required to stop after the white line bcause the lights are green for another direction. Interesting. Rather daft (and dangerous), but interesting.

The offence is commited if any part of the vehicle crosses the line against red, not just the front of the vehicle.
