I'm looking for some basic, cheap & cheerful (ie free), easy to configure scripts to stick on a webserver to do a basic photo gallery. Nothing too fancy, would be nice just to be abe to dump images in named folders and voila! Two more required features - should be able to assign logins to individual galleries and shouldn't be exploitable by legions of bored teenagers wishing to practise their website defacement skills.

Any recommendations?

Just been playing with some of these myself.

Gallery 2 is all singing all dancing. Flexible and according to the blurb should scale reasonably well. I found in the end that due to some restrictions of my current host that I couldn't get it to work properly (not Gallery's fault). The install process is actually very good though for something which is reasonably complex. I also found the support forum helpful and responsive.

An alternative which I have not managed to try yet is: Simple Picture Gallery Manager http://spgm.sourceforge.net/ which I think I first saw recommended here. It is similar but less sophisticated and looks a bit easier to set-up. Not sure whether it does the user logon stuff you need (Gallery 2 appears to have some pretty good capablities there).

Not suitable for you but for anyone else who may read this and for completeness. At the other end of the scale to Gallery 2, there's a popular and very simple Flash gallery available here: www.airtightinteractive.com/simpleviewer/

It is requires a bit more manual effort when creating the galleries, but can be configured to work with other catalogue programs on your PC (e.g. Picasa).

jalbum

Free and with a bunch of 'skins' to give it a variety of looks.

Example of my use of it here

Ditto for JAlbum
Some JAlbum skins are better than others. The one I use has excellent watermarking.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try out a couple of those this week and see how I get on. Just need to try and remember the credentials for my ftp account now... moan

Dammit, I just thought you were all being REALLY clever!

I designed my whole site myself (www.tonyhetherington.com) from start to finish, took me bloomin' weeks (bare in mind I didn't know FrontPage or HTML either to begin with). I then see all your flash (as in great) things and think "there's some good web people out there".

Swines hehe

Looks like I'm going to be having a redesign, me thinks....!

I'm building one with http://coppermine-gallery.net/ at the moment however, i've hit an issue as uploaded photos aren't actually displaying!!!

Or: www.minigal.dk/ or: http://gallery.menalto.com/

I've currently got all three installed but have not actually had time to get them all to work. I just wanted to see which one i liked the most.

Clikpic is another one that I have been looking into.

another vote for jalbum..

Very simple and you don't need any server side stuff.

Just been having a look at Jalbum. Looks great.

Question.

I have my own domain that I currently only use for e-mail. Can I download the jalbum program and a skin and then upload it onto my existing host server and have that skin with my piccies accessed when I type in www.gn1.co.uk (my domain) to the WWW?

That would be brill! And its all free????? Do you think they intend on getting millions of folks like me to upload albums and then in a while, they ask us all to pay some cash if we want to continue using it?

jalbum is an app you run localy, it creates a html site that you just upload to your webserver.
When you do updates it is clever enough only to update the files that have changed..
