Yesterday i was returning to Nottingham from Clitheroe via Sheffield. The weather was terrible....torrential rain, sleet and snow. My intended route took me over the a57(snakepass). I know this road well and with the outside temp at 2 degrees in Glossop i knew that the chance of settling snow on the top was high. I couldn't be ar$ed to make a detour across to leeds so i pressed on. Unsurprisingly half way up the snow was settling and by the top there was a bit on the road, i was following an x5 at about 40mph which was leaving some wide tracks which i stuck to without any deviation. The car behaved impecibly with no dramas. I was a little concerned that i would be faced with lourid wheelspin and tail sliding but not even a hint. These cars get such a bad rep being the widdowmaker but in all seriousness they are pussy cats if respected....it will scratch your eyes out if you take liberties though!

I live in Sheffield and visit my parents in Cheshire on a regular basis so I know the Snake very well.

Back when I was a student in sheffield I had a 1976 Mini 1000. Christmas 1990 I think, heavy snow, stopped off at petrol station in to fuel up for trip home for Christmas, asked guy in garage if Snake was open, he replied it should be ok, sheet ice all the way past ladybower, 20mph at most, I ploughed on and was on my own by the time the real Snake begins, snowing really heavy now and settling, too late to turn back and anyhow I've on a promise with an old girlfriend that night. get up to the steepest part just before summit, artic tanker stuck with Police landy behind with blues on, BIB flags me down, I wind down window, turn of Stone Roses and say hello, BIB looks at me and asks how the hell did I get this far, the Snakes been closed for 2 hrs, didn't I see the signs? no mate, too busy keeping it on the road, warns me to take it easy and keep an eye out for the signs next time, say thanks, winds window back up, turn Roses back on . . . . . 'i wanna be adoooored, adoooooooorred . . . .' the descent was hairy to say the least, thank god for 135 wide 10" dia. wheels and drum brakes all round

I too live in sheffield and have fond memories of me and my mate in an old Mini 1000 going up to the moors in the snow. At the first hint of a decent downfall we'd jump in the Mini, head up to some deserted white roads and practice some "techniques"! Sometimes involving either my mate or myself hanging off the back of the car and skiing! I swear, those cheapo £20 knobbly specials I had on the front of my mini made it grip better than any land rover!

Ahh yes, many a time we'd practice the old scandinavian flick!

You can't have fun like that in a Boxster!

Snake Pass, awesome road for a GT2, tyres are very wide at the back so aqua / snow planning / boarding a real posibility... be careful...

Mines asleep, hibernating until March....

Last time i went playing in the snow, dropped the car in a ditch and had to walk a very long way....

Anyway off to Sweden 4th Feb - Ice Driving using a frozen lake and studded tyres....yippee

I remember in the early 70's returning to my parents home in Lancashire via the Snake for Christmas. I had a Mk1 Sprite; 999cc engine, 649 cam, big carbs, post office van diff (thats 12.5 mph per 'ooo rpm in top) and heater removed to save weight. The only sensible thing was that I had the knobbly tyres on. The road was covered in snow and there were drifts on each side. All you could see in ther rear view mirror was a red glow from the tail lights on the snow. I think I had on every article of clothing I owned and was still cold. Made it though.

Mini 1000, pah luxury that is.

I studied at Sheffield and made frequent trips home to Manchester in a variety of studentesque transport including a Mini 850, Rover 3500SDI and tuned Citreon AX but before that were the bikes. The worst journey I've ever had was over Snake Pass on a Stan Stephens tuned RD400 on oversized Pirelli Phantoms. This particular bike made as much power as a AAA battery under 5K revs and with a power band the width of the cock on a chocolate mouse the full 60bhp before 7K. Freezing cold, zero visibility because of the driving snow, wheelspin on the way up and rear only braking on the way down.

Them were the days

Awesome thread.

Worst conditions I experienced were extreme fog in Baldock, around 3am in '96, returning from a club. Middle of a country lane miles from anywhere in silly conditions, with a visability of six inches. Took a hell of a time to go the last few miles back home.

once remember in 89 the fog was basically a wall.
My mate was sat on the bonnet of my XR3I (OK it was in 89 and i was 18)with a 100000million watt torch guiding me, scary stuff albeit my mind was pre ocupied with a couple of birds we had in the car at the time. They so scared they wanted us to stop there for the night........

I drove the other way over the 'tops' yesterday, in my GT3, to get to Manchester. I had a fabulous drive, till i got to Windle Edge....boy, did that stretch slow me down a tad! snow blowing over the open fields made for er, an interesting passage. But like nobbys GT2 the car behaved impeccably.....well most of the time
