1991 450SE lights pop up with side lights, which wire do I cut, diode thingy do I remove to stop this. I want the sidelights to come on and the pods to stay down, spoils the line of the car when driving at dusk. ( I will remove the headlight sidelight bulbs )

You learnt by your mistake, I think I'm going to have to do the same thing. At least then I will know what the right thing to do is.
First off you need to find the diodes. 
You may have two, three or even four of the things (my car has three and the pods stay down on sidelights!)... if you can get a photo or make a sketch of the installation (with any wiring colours if you can) then I can probably figure it out... otherwise I'll settle for the free sex (just not with any of you lot

)Oh now thats just rubbish! I read the start of this thread and thought it would be easy to sort this headlight issue! Shame because i always feel i should drive with side lights when the suns starting to go down...
On the same point, ive always thought that if you were 'might, just possibly, maybe, unlikely, but most probably be firmly holding the loud pedal' how likely is it for the light pod to come out???!! Ive always kinda imagined it coming straight for the windscreen at warp speed!!!

I did this a few years ago on my 400 - if I can find the wiring diagram I'll let you know - failing that, I'll have to take the stereo out and have a look.

My lights do the same but never found it is a problem, as I've always thought if it is dark enough to need side lights on, then it is dark enough to warrant having dipped lights on.
You are also probably more likely to leave your lights on, the pods being up are a good reminder to turn the lights off.

if any one has an answer. Mine are not doing that, but if yes would start looking from the steering column switch onwards (especially based on the strange types of operating I had due to a dodgy switch), to identify where it can be 'splitted' to make it work only on dipped. Could even be that the connection of the wires at the switch can make the difference.

OK it does, so what you're looking for is a diode or two (or three), connected to the lighting circuit in similar (though not necessarily identical) configuration to that shown . I've left out fogs, fuses and f***-ups just for clarity
The diode shown dashed is the one you'd need to remove to STOP the pods coming up with sidelights.
The diodes are usually mounted alongside the fuse box.
