thought i have some spare time today so i would locate a new serpentine alternator as part of the winter jobs to do (fluctuating output, flickering lights)so rang a landie main dealer wait for it ...................388+vat he,he,i would find this so amusing if it wasent so sick, what a rip off, they can be purchased new (exact same unit)on line for 118+vat from a reputable seller, even my local motor factors reconditioned best price of 148+vat trade couldent compete, just goes to show you always shop around.

Ron,thats just taking the p~ss i dont know where there getting these prices from its only an italian unit(magnetti marelli)not even bosch, now if it was a nippon/denso or mitsubishi unit at least i could understand the cost, there quality but expensive and very seldom go wrong.the outlets must be buying these in for a fraction of that £344 i dont mind paying but who likes being ripped.

Unfortunately it is one of those "must have" parts if it goes. No making do or living without it for a few weeks. So they have got you over a barrel and know it.

I bought mine off eBay last year for a similar sum- 130-ish I think. There's an old thread about it on here.

While it's actually reconditioned, not new, it's pretty good and others have bought the same.

Did you have to send your old one back, because when I went to a motor factors place they said I had to give them my old one or I would have to pay an extra £50.00 on the price.

The last one I bought, although mines a pre-serp if that makes a massive difference scratchchin was £45.83 exchange, from a place about a mile away from me that just does alternators and start motors. rotate

raceboy, they do differ quite a bit output etc,the unit you have are very universal fitting so tend to be cheaper,i dident want recon.as far as i know the serp alt only fits 2 engines the RV8 and the landrover 300 TDI engine from certain years.

They look uncommonly like the alts hidden under the manifolds of all those Longbridge shopping trolleys tho! I've never bothered to look under the hood of any Fiats, but wouldnt be surprised... 100A alts are fairly common nowadays it seems.

MMM but four lugs not that common, not like anything Fiat that i have seen, still Spend wish it was as easily available as the pre serp unit, anyway i would be interested if anyone bagged one of these alternators i would be pleased that it helped somebody out.
