I noticed that PC World are selling an Advent 7111 Laptop and has an excellent spec for £499. I bought Whatlaptop magazine and see it was reviewed last month. Can anyone please email it to me if they have it. Would I be better off buying a Sony, HP, Phillips or Fujitsu for a bit more money (probably over £200 extra in the case of the Sony) with same spec. I would only use it for internet but will be using Word and Excell quite a bit soon. Thanks in advance of your replies.

my first lap top was an advent

very pleased with it, still going after 4 years

robost got abused by its owner and receives more from the kids including shoving two dvds in the player then getting them out with my swiss army knife - but shhhhh don't tell dad

now have sony laptops, only as they are on special offer and have to spend the money as i don't want to give it
G. Brown esq

definitely have an advent again if it had the features I wanted on the sony with the offer I got with it

no doubt someone will be along saying they are a shower shit...but hey

I've heard bad things about advent reliability wise. How about this www.play.com/PC/PCs/PROD/3-/3304815/-/Product.html?add=3304815&P36=4UYJJ9 which won what laptop gold award before christmas . Apparently great usability and spec nad it was £800 bak then! I used to own a gateway desktop which never missed a beat.

In terms of actual stability and overall performance most Sony's come preloaded with so much additional software and freebies that they take ages to start up and then frequently encounter silly little problems, that I find really annoying. It's normally all this extra stuff that means you end up paying extra for Sony.

Advent give you as little as possible in terms of software and try to aim at giving you as much technology as they can for the money, however Advent don't actualy make computers or Laptops, they are just a brand name, and different generations of Advent are made by different manufacturers. Some of their machines have included high end components such as Asus at the top end while others have had components such as PC Chips parts used to make them, the whole package is only as good as the sum of its parts, so unless you know what's in it then I wouldn't buy Advent either.

Philips are made by the same company that will be putting Advent machines together, so again it depends on who made it and what they've put in it.

I suspect the Fujitsu Siemens are branded for rather then made by Fujitsu Siemens also, but can't be sure of it, same as Packard Bell to the best of my knoweldge.

I would consider HP as since they bought Compaq they have been incorporating much of the Compaq design principles that make HP some of the most stable and robust PCs and laptops that have used.

Out of all the laptops in all the world......

I would personally choose HP. Well made and reliable.

If you get the advent make sure you make your recovery media because i worked at PC Service Call who are the tech support for PC World, Curry's and Dixon's and people were looking at up to 2 months to receive recovery media. Ask here before you call tech supoport for any issues as i left because of how non technical it was getting, hiring TOTALLY non tech people while i was there the last 2 months there was about 50 technical people i know leave.
