ok - series 2 1/4. sometimes runs ok - then really plays up, cutting out and jumping about. how do i tell if this is fuel or ignition?

At a guess if it's intermittent its the electrics start by changing the leads, points, condenser, plugs and coil you no the routine . You could if you haven't got one already put in an inline fuel filter to rule shite fuel out.

Just to let you know a story of a Series 2A I owned a few years ago. The original tank was leaking and I changed it for a 2nd hand one. After that it was always cutting out and jumping and I did all the electrical bits to no avail.
Someone then suggested it was crap in the fuel and sure enough, when I took the tank out and emptied it all manner of rust and rubbish came out. After the clean it ran sweet as a nut.
An in-line fuel filter will certainly stop the rubbish coming through and a cheap way to find out if it is fuel.

thanks for the good advice. the condensor is my first target - its fed with 12v (no ballast), there isnt one shown in the haynes book of approximations, so perhaps there is a non-ballast type?
