Just making use of my new broadband connection when I decided to download the "service pack 2" for Windows XP (it's a bit of an old computer) trouble is, the thing didn't complete properly and came up with lots of error messages and froze- no option but to reboot - but now it gets as far as the Windows front screen and restarts! I've tried starting in safe mode, last known config etc with no joy. Haven't got the original boot disks to hand either. Should I just take it to the shop?

To be honest I was thinking of getting a new laptop anyway, but there are a lot of things on this one I would like to retrieve. Does it sound salvageable?

Cheers, Ed450

If it is down to software then you should be able to ressurect it by reinstalling windows from a CD, if you need to backup important stuff i suggest getting to a dos prompt some how, i think there is a startup mode for that (hold F8 on boot), failling that you might need to boot from a floppy like i had to do once.

try reading his post again he already said he tried it in safe mode.

try it with the recovery console first if no joy install windows over the top of the current install.

oldduffer, Try reading his post again, he said he didn't have any original CD's Sorry for the hostile reception if you are genuine but first you post a trojan and play dumb, now you're giving PC advice? :scrathchin:

Ed450, sorry, in answer to the question - yes it does sound salvagable, but you'd need a windows CD to do it so if you've not got one then the shop might be the answer. If it was me I wouldn't charge more than an hour if it was just a recovery console chkdsk/reinstall job with no complications (for example discovering that a failing HDD was the root cause, or the old 'nothing works afterwards' chestnut, not that we usually mess about with home stuff but that's besides the point)

Shop will be a good un. Although make sure you get a quote for the work before hand as they might drop a copy of Windows in with the price.
