Brought my 2-day old recently acquired 500 into work this morning (to get the exhaust fettled of course! ) and it DOES NOT like traffic. It gets a bit too hot my liking, about 105 or a tad more, enough to make it splutter a couple of times.

What is the max safe temp that the needle should go to?

I think that the first job will be a good flush out of the heating system and a lower temp thermostat when it goes in for it's service yes

(then possibly a Mod-wise 2-stage fan kit).

al, mine gets that hot too, in the summer on the hottest days i saw 110 deg!!!!!! but it never overheated, ive had my cooling system checked and water wetter added and a lower temp thermostat, but it never made a huge difference, but its never overheated, just makes me sweat my bo*&%$ks off on hot days ! during these winter months average is 80-100!

I went through the same with mine, did all the usaul stuff (smaller number plate, heat sheild, lower temp stat, flushing out the cooling system et.) none of which cured the problem so finally gave in and had the rad re-cored (£115) and all the problems went away.
so much so that i have had to remove some of the fixes i did to stop the temp dropping too low on the motorway.

If it's only £100 or so then I might well re-core the rad. I guess that is affected by age more than mileage, more so on a low milage car where water has been sat stationary for long periods of time?

Al 110 was my cut off point on Eurohoon.
I'm told the ali rads do a better job over standard

Ali rads are good and give better cooling over standard, but a re-cored standard one works fine for me. (£110 versus £350?). I do trackdays with my car and temp has never gone above 90 on the track and usually bounces around 75 on the motorway.
If you are going to get stuck in traffic a lot then the MOD-Wise two stage kit is bloomin' marvellous thumbup

PS My temp was hitting 105-110 in traffic and throttle sticking open at 2k rpm before the re-core.

You can't take the gauge reading absolutely at face value, but if it's accurate then that is far too hot for comfort. Those temperature changes will start distorting things and can eventually lead to internal damage. Were the fans working properly?

That sounds the most sensible option, make sure they fit all the cores. IMHO it is worth having a bung put in the rad just above the outlet (lower right ~ return hose) for an otter switch, they should be able to give you a blanking plug if you dont want to use it straight away.

The fans seem to be workking fine.

I had the mod-wise kit on my last Griff for when I took it down to Spain but never used it in the English summer/traffic. I just kept it turned down after winter so that it operated on the factory settings and temp was never a problem.

ANNND the b@st@rd pinks at full throttle acceleration. I used to HATE that with my last one!!!!!!!

Mine's running at about 70 in this cold air on the motorway. Might have to get one of those foil-covered peices of corrigated cardboard you see on the front of Volvos and old Land Rovers. Do Halfords sell them?

Mine ran at 85 degrees on the 170mile run up the motorway on Sunday. Though I noticed when I was just sat at the service station idling it did go above 90.

That sounds like the 72/4Cish stat syndrome, if your cooling works ok I see no prob with the higher (80/2Cish) stat (IMO the lower stat was only a firefighting solution).

Do the thermostats have their rating stamped on them? So I can check what mine is (if I can get to it without breaking something that is!)

When the fans come on, how long do they stay on?

In that case check whether you have an air lock in the radiator. The main cooling problem with these cars is caused by insufficient cold air flow through the rad, and that shouldn't be an issue at this time of year.

Now that's getting complicated!!! How do i do that without putting more air in?

Sorry, but I rarely have either the time or patience or know how for that matter, to do my own mechanicals!
