I've just ordered some memory for my laptop but the new memory is 512mb and it currently has 220-odd. The site I ordered it from says max memory is 512mb, so will I have to take the old memory out to put the new one in (there appears to be a free expansion slot) or will inserting the new one override the existing memory, making it redundant? The laptop is a Packard Bell Easy Note C3 series if that makes any difference?

How to do it:

http://support.packardbell.com/uk/ite

Tech specs:

http://support.packardbell.com/uk/ite

which indicates that the max ram in the expansion slot is 512MB, so you should have a total of 768MB once you're done (i.e. Your existing 256MB that's non-removeablr plus the new 512 you're putting in the expansion slot).

excellent, so the site means maximum expansion when it says 512, PB clearly say max supported 768, so it should be better than I was expecting!

It means the max size of one card (memory) that you buy, if you bought 2x512mb then you could have a memory of 1024mb of memory, that would be your maximum.
I have just put a 512mb in mine as well as the 256, and it has speeded everything up, it now also takes half the time to power up, well work the money and doing.

The specs for that machine say it has 2 lots of ram - one 256Mb soldered in place therefore not upgradeable and one expansion slot taht can take a max of 512Mb, so the OP should have 768 total once finished but that's as far as it will go.
