Thanks for your comments on my previous few days posting.
I have come across a '96 500 griff with 60k ish miles.

I have not yet seen the car but have been told the clutch is starting to slip when in 5th gear when "hooned".

I have also been told that there is a slight tappet rattle sometimes and a new tappet is needed. A quick bit of research (unless anyone can suggest otherwise) would suggest that new tappets and camshaft would be in order.

How much would I be looking to pay for this work to be done at a small garage? I'm not bothered about TVR dealerships willing to charge me £100 per hour for a spotty 17 year old youth on a training scheme to tinker with my P&J, just a bog std garage any of us would use. I do have a guy I use all the time and he's great with V8s. I just want to get an idea before I ask him.

I know I could buy a fully sorted car and not have the hassle but this ones going for an absolute bargain as the owner is knocking the price down based on what he has been quoted by a main dealer.

Cheers,
Lee.

Hi Lee

Clutches are fairly straightforward and will cost £500 plus to fix.

More worrying is "a slight tappet rattle" The previous owner of mine had that, and ended up with a bill for a new engine

I'd definitely get a second opinion before just accepting the diagnosis given by the seller. Maybe you could get the seller to fix the car and then pay for the costs, "if" it cures the problem.

Whatever, personally I'd never just replace one tappet. You'd need to replace all 16, and the camshaft. Bank on around a grand

Thanks Geoff.

No wonder the guy only wants £10k for a '96 500 Griff

Maybe the search should continue....

I was going to say £7-£800 for the cam... but why be so dismisive of TVR dealers? I use racing Green and they are excellent.

My local (who shall remain nameless) just sees the TVR marque as a liscence to print money.
I'll say no more as I'm not one for name dropping.
VERY excessive labour rates and 1 hour jobs apparently take 3 hours....

Its about this sort of mileage the cam needs doing on most RV8's in any case. So this would afflict most cars you'd be looking at unless the cam's been changed

When i was looking for a car, I also checked a few cheap cars which needed engine refresh , as I thought also it could be good deal to save money on the buy and to use the money to make a serious refresh to be in peace for a few years. In case I had asked to V8D to have somde idea of the cost of a simpke good rebuild, here is what they had quoted me, it can be usefull for you.

But at the end, there are cars very good which does need nothing for cheap now, so I gave up the idea.

Hello Xavier,
It is a little difficult to give an accurate quotation without having seen the engine but I will try and give you a ‘ball park’ figure and some possible costs;
1) At 80,000 miles and assuming it is unaltered from new, you will definitely need a new camshaft kit - £450
2) If the bores are okay .. which they probably are, you will need the cylinders Honing and new rings fitting to the pistons - £70
3) New Bearings (big end and main) will be essential - £125
4) Rocker assemblies are likely to be worn - £175 (pair)
5) Heads are likely to need refurbishment - £200 if valves are okay - £595 if valves need replacing
6) Basic maintenance including core plugs, gaskets and seals – £80
7) Labour to strip, check and rebuild - £450

This gives a total of - £1,945 – please bear in mind that this is assuming that all of the above is required and is also assuming that the block is okay and that there are no major faults with any of the components.
This does not include removal from the vehicle or re-fitting to the vehicle. Both of these services are available at a total cost of £1000 on top of that quoted.

Thank you for your enquiry.

To be fair to V8D they do a top job, ask anyone that has dealt with them thumbup. £3k for what in effect is complete rebuild to standard spec is not excessive if you take out the removing and refitting costs then £2k is good value in my book.
The biggest problem is resisting upgrades whilst it apart as the labour is already covered and is obviously the ideal time to do it, been there hehe

If the engine needs work, then IME the brakes, suspension, electrics etc all will as well. Even if you buy a 'sorted' one keep a slush fund for the inevitable/unexpected.
