Help! "Word" scrolling and 1/2 Screen slideshows

Guys and gals, your help greatly appreciated by an absolute computer numpty.
Just had to upgrade my box from an NT2000 to this awful XP thingy and have now serious problems.
1) I used ACDSee 3.1 to view photofiles and as a slide show. New slideshow progs DO NOT have a 1/2 screen possibility which is absolutely rubbish as I need to show slow scrolling Word text alongside in another window (machine photos and machine descriptions, so customers can get a feel for the product!) My old ACDSee will not copy onto this computer, obviously it#s too good for Microsoft.
Any recommendations for a new slideshow prog with that capability?
2) The scrolling in the 2003 Microsoft Office Word will not run slowly so that one can read it, it flies by!! (the old version ran as slow as one wanted). Have checked new optical mouse (doesn't change anything), have tried with old mechanical mouse, no difference, seems to be in this version of Word....
BTW It works fine (normally and slowly enough to read) in the Interweb and on anything outside Word....
By scrolling, I mean click on the right of the window on the mousewheel, one gets a double black arrow which then moves the text down with varying speed according to the distance one moves the mouse....
3) How do I delete the equivalent to the old "Recent" files as more than one uses this new computer i.e so no-one can browse what I've been doing....
