Recommend a game....

Company of heroes is the current best RTS. It beats C&C hands down because of the way it's designed - you can't turtle and send a massive force over, you HAVE to push forward.
Remain to be convinced with Supreme Commander - the beta test got mixed reviews, (i didn't really like it). It certainly looks pretty and has a fantastic pedigree. It's only just gone gold though, so should be appearing on a bit torrent near you soon!

honestly, get compnay of heroes (it's a WW2 game), you won't be disappointed. there's no copy protection on the game, so if you wanted to you could grab it, and if you liked it, go and buy it. I recommend buying it immediately though, as it is fantastic.

Have you looked at the Totalwar games, like Rome and Medieval?
Not present day but IMHO the best war command games around. They were used on the BBC's program Time Commanders and used also in battle re-enactment programs on the History Channel.

After playing that I can't go back to games like Command & Conquer or Age of Empires.
The only other startegy game I know with much realism is the Close Combat series set in the 2nd world war. The graphics are poor, certainly compared to Total war, but the game play is very good, particularly with Close Combat 2, set on the Eastern front.
If you play this game you will swiftly discover that, unlike in Command & Conquer, a bloke firing a machine gun at a tank, might as well be blowing kisses.

How do you mean copy protection? Is it like shareware where you can legally use it then pay for it?
Hey !
You want to have a bash at 'Defcon' there is a free demo on most games mags at the moment or can down load free from intervision (i think)
Global thermonecular war aka wargames from the 70's. I been playing this on line for the last month or so. its great and free. You can buy the full game for aout £10.
I would also echo praise the Medieval 2 (Total war) series.
Silent hunter 3 (sub game about £15 on ebay) SH4 is out shortly.
I bet Defcon will float your boat. Play on line - I would be keen to see who will lose the least on a PH game.

I'm looking for a PC strategy game along the lines of Command And Conquer. I don't like first person type games preferring the birds eye view of the battle field etc.
Any thing worth looking at or should I just continue to kick seven bells out of the Chinese on C+C?!

Wait a month and get Command Conquer 3!
I have CoH,it's good, but a little too 'manic' for my taste - doesn't give you time to breath! I find Rome - Total War (along with some excellent mods like RTR and TE) a perfect game for me; I can sit down with a coffee and plan my strategy, taking as long as I want before clicking the end turn button. I also have Medieval 2, but to be honest, although it does have slightly prettier graphics, the gameplay isn't as good as Rome, and the immersion experience sufferes because of it.
I think RTW is THE perfect armchair strategy game, and it's so addictive!

C&C 3 is looking nice, but you'll need DX9 Shader3 card to get the most of it like most of the newer games now which just look stunning with all these graphical goodies turned on!
I quite like Dawn of War series, bit more close-up than C&C and more micro-management. The last version has 7 sides I think, and each one has quite unique units and methods of economy etc, and rather than annihilating the enemy it can be about holding tactical positions or decapitation of the enemy leader etc...
I quite liked it anyway.

Do any of you know any RTS games that centre around the Napoleonic war era?
None specific but there's a mod being worked on for Medieval 2 here - http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthr

Interesting stuff, but I imagine the Total War team will bring out a game set in a later period in any case sooner or later, they can't keep redoing the same periods in history.
