Legal obligation to protect web visitors from email harvest
Discussion
Is there any legal obligation on the operator or owner of a website to prevent the harvesting of email addresses from a website? Specifically:
1. Site visitor types their email address into a contact form in order to send a message to site operator
2. On submission of the form, someone picks up the user's email address via packet sniffing or suchlike and then sends spam to the user
The forms operate on a simple formmail script using Perl. Would be simple to pass such traffic via SSL but are there any other obligations / precautions **legally** required??
