Noisy fuel pump

Just back from a run around London, car behaved fine until about the last 20 mins when the idle seemed a little lumpy, when I parked up I noticed a electrical noise, first thought it was the fans but then realised it was the fuel pump, now I don;t remember it but noise like that, wondering if it's got a bit hot where it was running for about 3 hours or if I just never noticed it before.

is that normal?

Mine makes that noise most of the time, but it's a higher pitch when the car is hot. I guessed it ws normal - it's never affected the running of the car.

Might not be a problem then, the car seemed to get a little lumpy too though but has often done the same when sat in traffic for hours, never noticed the pump noise before though.

Mine has done that from time to time, I think it's the hot fuel cavitating inside the pump, goes away when it cools down. But I've also noticed that pumps often do this before they go t1ts up. Wouldn't hurt to start thinking about getting your hands on a spare pump just in case. Once you have the spare you know the original will last forever.

I will have a look about for a spare, also going to get a stepper motor as the idle sometimes is sitting at 2000 rpm when cold, not always though.

paul there was a guy doing these on Ebay a little while back about £55 all in new,i got one as a precaution couldent argue for that money.i have my old one if you get stuck im in the S/east area most of the time,they also get noisy if the inlet gets obstructed or the fuel filter is getting clogged, a bit unlikely knowing the service these cars receive.

Are the pumps from anything else or just TVR's? Had a search on ebay but couldn't see any.

I'd guess that it's a Land Rover part?

cavalier/astra if memory serves,my original was Lucus the replacment is Bosch......but get this the replacment Bosch is identical in everyway and i mean in everyway(weird)all i can think is either the pump are made outside of both manafacturers or one is making the pumps under licence of the other,very strange,i cant see the connection with the two,anyway i will see if i can dig out the guys phone no.

Ok spend, LUCAS i need spelling lessons i guess,lol.....Oh paul i will try to dig that phone no/item,i just have, mailed him to see if he can get any more,it supersedes lucas no PRC6242 FITS,jag 74/89 opel senator 88/90, porsche 74/77 .....as 7.7mm outletand 12mm inlet bosch numbers 9530810025/389032325 if my man does not come up trumps then try any Bosch dealer or Euro car parts or German & swedish(both bosch agents)they should be able to help,or a Lucas agent with the PRC 6242 no, may be able to help but a lot of Lucas stuff is in short supply now.

simon,thats twice as much as i paid,the pump is not car specific,but thats a good fall back for sure.
