Please help with purchase dilema
Discussion
Hi everyone, could anyone steer me in the right direction - have two possible cars in the running to be bought, 96 20K blue 355 spider wiht tan leather from specialist dealer or 97 29K rosso 355 berlinetta with cream leather from private seller. Both the similar price. berlinetta recently had belts, exhaust valve and both manifolds. My heart was for a spider but concerned about re sale as blue is not everyones cup of tea. All views greatfully received. PS original idea was to buy car with 20K miles and put on 15K in 2 years selling at 35K. How does buying a car at 29K and selling at 45K sound ? Thanks in advance.
i cant comment on the mileage issues, but regarding colour:
355 fits in the era of ferraris that everyone still expected to be red. I bought a tdf blue 355 spider which to me looked stunning. When it came to selling it, there is a category of buyer out there (like me) who doesnt want a red ferrari, however i reckon its a minority. Seems to be people on their 2nd or later f-car. Also some dealers wont touch one unless its red.
Rosso/crema is said to be the easiest resale combo.

That's why it's called "re-sale red".
Buy the car you want to drive. Come the summer you will probably kick yourself for not getting the Spider. The Spider should also be slightly cheaper at this time of year as people are not thinking about summer yet, if it isn't haggle the price down a bit for this and also the fact it is a less popular colour. If you buy it cheap then you can move it on again at thje same discount.
You say you want to drive the car for two years or so, don't regret missing the one you want now because of worrying of losing a bit when you sell years down the line.

I'd personally buy a GTB over a spider. I've owned a spider and it is good open top motoring but there is lot's more to go wrong and bills are alot higher. The GTB also feels better when your pushing it, advantages of having a tin top.
As for colour, get what you want but Red / crema is important if you want to get out of the car quickly, the maket for non-red cars is smaller.
Mileage is a weird one, everyone will tell you it doesn't matter and it's good you drive your car but come to selling time don't think many people will be biting your hand off for a 45k plus Fezza. As long as you can take the financial hit then mileage is not an issue but you'll be buying a sub 30k Fezza which is what everyone wants and you'll be selling a 40k+ car which has a limited market.

They're different cars, so you have to buy which one your heart wants (assuming they're both the same quality). If you don't, you'll regret it.
What price are they up for?
I prefer the GTB all the way (no shit sherlock). Beautiful car.
Surprised at MLT suggesting the B though as he owned a Spider. Suspect he's seen the light now with the CS
BTW, after red I'd go TdF or black as I think most would. If you find the right buyer, residuals may not be any different.
