I've just put down a deposit on a 91 964C4 but might have made a little mistake. Whilst I could reconcile the VIN in the V5 with that in the sticker in the service book, I could not do the same for the engine number. The first V5 issued with the car at first reg did not have the same engine number as that in the sticker. I'm thinking that this could be because the number in the sticker is a generic model number, but, it could also mean that it's had a new engine. However, I'm thinking (praying) thats it's the former because it would seem strange that the car had an engine replacement on the day it was first registered by the first owner. Any 964 owners care to share their experience?

The engine no should match the v5. Even if it has had a replacement engine the p/o should have informed the DVLA (although to be honest I have never bothered but I would on a Porsche), I don't know about the sticker on the car/book but it could be an error.

Just to put these things in to perspective for the past however many years my car has had the wrong chassis no on the v5, it was missing the last digit, this has only shown up this year with the change to electronic MOT's.

Don't stress too much and even if it had a new engine it shouldn't put you off the car, at the end of the day it isn't and never will be a super rare classic car that total originality is essential, I've been there with Jaguars and Lotus Elans and it is a pain!

For what it's worth on my 993 the engine number doesn't appear on the front lid sticker or in the service book.

Ok that makes me feel a little better. So you don't have anything beginning with M to denote the engine # even underneath any VIN #?

That might be the engine type rather than the serial number, i.e. "M64.01".

OK so the number in the sticker in the book could be the model number and the serial number is what is in the V5 which I would need to match to the plate in the vehicle?

According to Philip Raby's buyers guide, a MY '91 (ie 1990-91) 964 C4 should have an engine number in the 62M00001 and up range, a MY '92 (1991-92) should start 62N...

Engine type for both is M64/01.

OK so I have just spoken to the OPC that supplied the vehicle who gave me what looks like the engine number: 62m06871. My question is that should I be worried if this is not the number that is in the sticker in the manual which as i suspected is a generic engine model for the m64 engine?

The sticker doesn't have the actual engine number, just the model number (e.g. M64/01). Only place the engine number appears is on the engine (on the fan shroud support). The engine number you've been given is for a 1991 engine, and is what should be on the V5. All sounds fine to me.
