Strong Fuel smell.

I have read many postings on this and am still not sure where to start first.

I know that it could be a fuel line leak or breather pipe.

Where do I start first? i.e. most common fault.

I know that I am getting very bad fuel efficiency; 140miles to a tank...this can't be good. So any help would be great. Is there an easy way for me to adjust the richness level?

Any help would be great. rememebering that I do not have the software to check anything.

Check the filler neck in the boot is not loose.

I've just had a fuel leak, check in the nsr wheel arch. The fuel pump and filter are in there somewhere.

Fuel economy like that I'd get the laptop and check your Lambda and coolant temp sensors.

Sounds like it's plainly overfuelling.

KEv - per Ridds you really need to get the software. You can use a £30 old lap top and a pretty standard lead. If you run the car, plug in the laptop and then take a screen print or two you can post on here to get views on it.

I'd check it quickly. Remember all those postings about cars catching fire due to brittle fuel pipes.

Could be under the bonnet, go along all the pipes and check don't take chances! There has been a few that just explode whilst driving along. One guy bought a cerb two days later he was driving into his sisters road and bang, fuel line split up went the car.

Yeah on mine the bolt at the top of the fuel filter had come very slghtly loose and the smell of petrol was very strong if you stood by the back of the car.

It was behind the rear passenger wheel in the wheel arch, in fact when the engine was running it leaked fuel as the pressure built up so was quite pleased that we found it before it leaked onto the exhaust, otherwise my pops and bangs might have had an added effect !
