Is it possible? I have a USB drive so that bit is sorted but the problem is the wife never brings hers upstairs to the office so I am wondering if there is 'something' wireless I can use?

I know you can get the web backup services but she doesnt trust those - and I am yet to be convinced.

So is there something I could do for a wireless solution?

You could use a network storage device and run a backup task from the PC on a regular/whenever connected basis.

Do you have a wireless router with ethernet ports? If so, there are a variety of storage devices on the market that will plug straight in (and give you loads more space for all those photos and videos ) - I use a LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini.

Hope you are well mate, will we see you both at Goodwood Brekkie club?

Hi,

I have been looking at a wireless back-up solution for my father for sometime and have now set up a reliable system. To give you a little background first. There is an established wireless network in the house using a Netgear DG834GT wireless router. One desktop connects via ethernet, one via wireless and a laptop obviously wirelessly. I wanted to hide a hard drive remotely from the computers that he could back up to. Without going through all the options that I discounted for various reasons (see bottom of post) the solution I went for was to buy a 320GB Buffalo Link Statation Pro Network Attached Storage device and a Netgear WGE111 Wireless bridge (marketed as a gaming adapter). I originally bought a Linksys bridge but after the first one arrived and didn't work (couldn't be pinged or reset!) I stuck with Netgear as I've always found their products very reliable.

Anyway, if you want to look at (and in my case discount for the reasons given) some options see below:

Iomega solution (perfect solution except that I don't need a TB and did't want to pay that much)

Tritton solution (looks promising except that it won't integrate with an existing network. It has to be set up on its own network which is, frankly, bloody useless! Oh, and there are no UK retailers!)

Linksys Wireless Bridge (I ordered one - it didn't work!)

Netgear Bridge (Worked first time and has so far been 100% reliable)

www.netgear.com/Products/Adapters/GWirelessAdapters/WGE111.aspx

Buffalo NAS (Bought as they're fast and relaible though the speed is limited by the wireless bandwidth)

www.buffalo-technology.com/products/product-detail.php?productid=154&categoryid=35

Best of luck.

I'm thinking of one of these, I don't need anything too fancy.

Hi Mark,

That should be fine if you want a wired solution i.e. via Ethernet cable into your router. However, if you want wireless then you'll need a Wireless Bridge - obviously it's up to you. The reason I wanted the wireless element was that I wanted to hide the hard drive remotely from the main computers in case my father's house was broken into and his computer taken (it has been twice in 5 years though with a beefed up security system I suspect it won't be happening again).

Regards

Not good news!

I only need it to be wireless in so far as we don't want to have to plug the laptop in to the external HDD.

No problem with having it wird to the router.

Cheers thumbup
