Hi All,

I did post this in SP&L earlier today, but feel this important enough to post here as well.

If you use this road, especially the top quality Buxton - Newhaven stretch and don't want to have to drive at 50 on this regularly scammed road, then drop them a line and let them know how you feel.nonomoan

Nowt to lose and all that!

Council Plan 50 limit on Entire A515
Derbyshire County Council plan to reduce the speed limit on the entire length of the A515 from Buxton via Ashbourne to Sudbury from NSL (60) to 50 mph, except where it is already lower.

This is a superb driving road and, while the quality does vary, it contains some of the straightest and best-aligned sections of single carriageway rural A-road in the country. Reducing this entire road to a 50mph limit is a total absurdity, and symptomatic of the council's fanatical and irrational obsession with reducing speed limits.

Objections to the proposal, stating the reasons for the objection, should be sent in writing by 16 February 2007 to:
Strategic Director - Environmental Services
(FAO North Western Traffic Team)
County Hall
Matlock

Great bit of road that, a 10mph change in the actual limit wont make any difference to the way anyone drives it anyway.

The scammers will have a field day - Vans patrol the best bit on a regular basis.

They were on Newhaven straight the other day... Fortunately there were cars coming the other way or I'd have safely overtook the car infront and collected three points as I passed 'Go'....

James here:

I had quite a protracted conversation with Simon Tranter at the council who is in charge of the notice. I read circular 1/06 which relates to the setting of limits in rural areas which is the important legislation. The bottom line and I did debate it was that writing a 10 page report pointing out the errors would not go anywhere. The council basically confirmed it will be happening and it is because of gov direction so I took the Atom out for a spin instead...

Yes the speed limit is stupid and will probebly increase accidents but central governament is driving it...

Howdy James. I can actually miss most of this stretch and use a C road that goes parallel to the A515 and take in the limestone scenery of Sterndale. Or set the cruise on GPS 56mph and grab 40 winks!

It is 'crying wolf' and it helps to bring the whole system of speed limits into disrepute - especially when the local scammers turn the stretch between Buxton and Newhaven into a 10 mile speed trap / extorsion racket! That will piss a few people off!

Letter written. Afaik most authorities aren't used to objections and don't know how to deal with them. We should object everytime we see an absurd limit being proposed.

I would but as said before you usually don't know about them until the dreaded sign appears. I can't understand this idea that just dropping the speed limit = safety. Even my mom gets fed up of the 40 club lol

I've written 2 letters - one at the end of January to register my complaint to the 'Strategic Director' as per the address on ABD website.

I have also just written a second letter focusing on the straight Buxton - Newhaven stretch, which is asking some more probing questions pertinent to putting a 50 limit on that bit. Looking at the 'Circular Roads 1/2006: Setting Local Speed Limits' document, they are by no means obliged by central government to impose a blanket 50 limit on the whole road.

The document also warns about treating differing stretches of road with different characteristics as a single case. The A515 from Buxton - Newhaven is far higher in quality than the Newhaven - Fenny Bentley, yet the whole stretch is down for a 50 limit!
