confused

Please can somebody give me some tips. I've done everything I know of: Keywords, page title, tags, description, body text on each page and submitted URL to Google, Lycos and the web host.

Apart from paying $s to one of the many of companies that claim to get your site ranked, what else can I do? It's very important for this business site to get noticed. When I search with the name of this company, even in quotes - zilch.

The frustrating thing is that my first attempt at building a personal/family/wedges website (in MSFP), several years ago, pops up near the top of Google everytime.

Main thing is quality links to the site, dmoz.org is the main one.

Type the domain for similar sites in as a search term and see where they link from.

You could put a link here and it'll be picked up, ie www.outsource-your-payroll.co.uk

Not a bad idea... www.cloudamber.com

Typo police - I've not gone through everything, but came across quite a few, and although it seems picky, <snip - that comment doesn't need to be around forever!>....but benefit of the doubt and so on: -

on the homepage:

travelers (double L)
roadwork's (lose the apostrophe)

Careers page:

Vite (vitae)

Products page:

technoligy (-> technology)
apropriate (-> appropriate)

Firstly, you DON'T need to manually submit your sites to search engines. They will find your site by following links on other sites to yours. Despite most search engines having an "Add Site" function, there is anecdotal evidence with Google at least to suggest that the waiting list on these functions are soooo long as to render them useless.

To find out if your site is indexed by a search engine, simply type in this query:

site:www.yourdomain.com

This will return all the pages on your site that are indexed. This query works on Google, Yahoo and MSN.

If you find your site isn't very well indexed there are plenty of things you can do for free. Create an XML sitemap of your site using a free XML sitemap tool such as this one. You can then log into Google|https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/si, claim your site and upload the sitemap to help Google index all your pages. Yahoo are also rolling out several Webmaster tools which I've only just started using, but they look similar to Google.

Get some quality links to your site that the search engines will follow. If your site has an RSS feed, submit that feed to sites like FeedBurner.com and Feedster.com. Submit a "story" to news sites like Digg.com and Reddit.net. The search engines love these kinds of sites and will follow the links to your site and index it well.

The other thing to check if your site is not very well indexed is that you are not using fancy JavaScript menu systems or other kinds of links that SEs might have problems with following.

I hope this helps you out a little bit and I haven't blinded you with too much jargon!

Thank you officer . My business partner is also on the same force and had already picked some of it apart. The annoying thing is I hadn't uploaded the one I had changed. Needless to say, all should be well now.
